Soccer-Mental strength not mind games will win title-Pellegrini

Feb 11 (Reuters) – Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini said mental strength will decide who wins the Premier League and not mind games between managers as he declined to continue a verbal spat with Chelsea’s Jose Mourinho.

The Chilean coach is looking to steer his third-placed side back to winning ways at home to Sunderland on Wednesday after their title chase stumbled with a home defeat by Chelsea, who now top the table, and a draw at lowly Norwich City last week.

Manchester United thwarted by last-gasp Bent goal for Fulham

LONDON (Reuters) – An injury-time goal from Fulham’s Darren Bent inflicted more pain on champions Manchester United as the bottom club rescued a 2-2 Premier League draw on Sunday, adding fuel to the fire for manager David Moyes’s critics.

It was a further blow to United’s hopes of securing Champions League football next season and left them nine points behind Liverpool in fourth spot and six adrift of Tottenham Hotspur who beat Everton 1-0 with a goal from Emmanuel Adebayor.

LONDON (Reuters) – Kevin Pietersen’s brilliant and controversial England career is over after he was told this week that he no longer figured in plans for the future with the batsman saying he “deeply regrets” that he won’t play for his country again.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced on Tuesday that Pietersen had been left out of the squad for this year’s World Twenty20 and limited overs tour of the Caribbean bringing the curtain down on an international career in which he was England’s leading run-scorer in all formats.

LONDON, Feb 4 (Reuters) – Kevin Pietersen’s England career was ended on Tuesday after he was left out of the squad for this year’s World Twenty20 and limited overs tour of the Caribbean.

“Kevin Pietersen met with Paul Downton, the Managing Director England Cricket, this week and was told that the unanimous decision of the England management, including the selectors, was that now was the time to start the rebuilding process after England’s disappointing winter in Australia,” the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said in a statement.

(Reuters) – Britain beat the United States to reach the Davis Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 1986 on Sunday as Japan finished off an injury-hit Canada to set up a maiden appearance in the last eight.

They joined holders Czech Republic, Italy and Kazakhstan as Sunday’s other qualifiers and Switzerland, Germany and France, who booked their places in the World Group last eight with a day to spare.
