Calm Cheika taking it one game at a time

LONDON (Reuters) – Michael Cheika has made taking one game at a time the underpinning theme of Australia’s World Cup, so there was little surprise that he brushed off a devastatingly brutal victory over England as “just another step”.

The Australia coach could have been forgiven a hearty celebration having emerged from the fevered atmosphere of a hostile Twickenham with a record-breaking 33-13 win that moved them safely into the quarter-finals.

Real tests yet to come, says Ireland coach Schmidt

LONDON (Reuters) – The World Cup starts now was the message Ireland coach Joe Schmidt had for his players after Sunday’s 44-10 win over Romania sent them top of Pool D, but with sterner tests on the horizon.

With bonus points safely tucked away from their opening Rugby World Cup salvo against Canada and Sunday’s one-sided affair at Wembley, the task of navigating through early encounters as heavy favourites has been accomplished.

Rodgers feeling the heat at Liverpool

LONDON (Reuters) – Pressure is something that Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers says comes with the territory, but after a dismal run, the odds on him becoming the season’s first managerial casualty are swiftly shortening.

Rodgers’s side face Aston Villa at Anfield on Saturday (1400 GMT) with the voices of dissenting fans starting to make themselves heard following a four-game winless Premier League streak that has left them seven points behind leaders Manchester City after six games.
