Simpler inauguration planned for a more modest pope

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) – Pope Francis celebrates his inaugural Mass on Tuesday among political and religious leaders from around the world and amid a wave of hope for a renewal of the scandal-plagued Roman Catholic Church.

Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to cram St. Peter’s Square and surrounding streets for the Mass on Tuesday to formally install Francis as the new leader of the world’s 1.2 billion Roman Catholics.

European Muslims see dialogue hope in pope name

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) – Muslims in Europe see hope for better relations with Roman Catholicism after the new pope took the name Francis, recalling the 13th-century saint known for his efforts to launch Christian dialogue with Islam.

Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio chose the name after his election on Wednesday in honor of St. Francis of Assisi, who is revered for his radical poverty and humility. Francis met the sultan of Egypt in 1219 on a peace mission during the Fifth Crusade.

The Jesuits, the legendary order of Roman Catholic priests known for its intellectuals, missionaries and iconoclasts, are unusual in the Church because they take a vow of obedience to the pope.
