RYE, New Hampshire — As the oldest candidate in the race for the White House, one would think John McCain might want to avoid the subject of his advancing years.
But the 71-year-old Arizona senator was cracking jokes about it as he ushered in the new year and seeking to lock in supporters ahead of the state’s Jan. 8 primary contest.
McCain was in a relaxed mood as he took questions on everything from the turmoil Pakistan to UFOs at a house party here on New Year’s Eve.
Rounding up his appearance, he vowed to do what’s best for America as president – ”whether it’s for one year or eight years.”
“I made a bit of a joke,” he told Reuters afterwards. “But I’m going to be president for eight years if I’m president.”
