Pelosi greeted with “Impeach” Bush and Cheney buttons

U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi says she’s drawing heat from fellow Democratic lawmakers as well as people across the nation for refusing to move to impeach President George W. Bush or Vice President Dick Cheney.

“I go through airports, and people have buttons as if they knew I was coming,” Pelosi said with a smile, mimicking a protester pointing to an “Impeach” button on their chest.rtx4btx.jpg

But the California Democrat said she is sticking to her position that trying to remove Bush or Cheney would be divisive, and she added, most likely unsuccessful. If the House voted to impeach Bush and Cheney, a two-thirds vote would be needed in the closely divided Senate to oust them.

Many Democrats and civil liberties groups have accused the Bush administration of misleading the United States into the Iraq war and violating the rights of U.S. citizens with its warrantless surveillance program. The White House denies the charges.

In helping Democrats win back control of Congress in 2006 from rtr1vyu5.jpgRepublicans, Pelosi said she would not push for impeachment despite a number of calls to do so.

Speaking with reporters, she recalled that she wanted to focus on unifying the nation, passing the Democrats’ legislative agenda — not picking an impeachment fight with the White House.

“It was my belief that an impeachment of the Vice President or the President … would be very divisive in our country, and that is what I believed then,” Pelosi said. “It should have come to no surprise when I became Speaker I said it again, and I continue to hold that view.”

Yeah, I guess if Rove and DeLay never went to jail, then it comes as no surprise that Bush and Cheney will ride off into high-paying jobs in the private sector funded by defense and big oil, instead of being held accountable for burning our nation to the ground.

Pelosi and other top Democrats were informed years ago about the illegal wiretapping by the White House, the torture or prisoners and other crimes. By not reporting the crimes she was and is complicit in the criminal activity. Opening up the impeachment proceedings would expose her to damaging testimony, possible arrest and certainly ending her political career. She’s covering up for the administration because she has helped them shred the Constitution. In her eagerness to become one of the powerful she has sold out the nation. It’s obvious.

It dosn’t matter what anyones opinion is, it matters what your Constitutional duty is, and that means upholding the oath you took when you took office, to protect and defend THE CONSTITUTION!
There is ample evidence of crime, misdemeanors and quite possibly, treason(I believe thats what they call outing our own CIA agents)

It is too bad the Democratic party never got over loosing in 2000. Since they have been in control of Congress, they have not been able to accomplish anything except posture to buy votes. The leadership (Pelosi and Reed) has brought down even the few non-partisan Dems that are trying to get needed things accomplished, like immigration reform, tax reform, and protecting the country against Islamofascists.

One day the trials will come and I hope to see her vapid, vain countenance at the head of the pack of defendants. The nerve of her to actually state that she is taking impeachment off the table. It should come as no surprise that the Democrats, ever more so under Pelosi’s leadership, care more for their corporate masters than for the people or the Constitution.

I live in San Francisco where Pelosi has snubbed her own constituents since long before the impeachment issue ever gathered the national momentum it has now.

People seem to forget that impeachment is mearly a hearing to find facts. They also seem to forget that no one wanted impeachment of Nixon (not even the repulicans) until the impeachment proceedings uncovered what he was really doing than even the repulicans could not deny the facts. I suspect the same thing would happen this time. Shame on her for not standing up for the constitution and the american people

It’s not about whether it’s hard - it’s about what’s right. Bush and Cheney have violated the law, and not just any law, but the basis of all our laws - the constitution. They lied to all of us about Iraq’s nonexistent WMDs, and caused the death of thousands of our soldiers and wasted untold billions of our money on an unnecessary and tragic war that’s made the whole world more dangerous. It is in our Constitution to impeach leaders when they have committed high crimes and misdemeanors. All of Congress signed an oath to the Constitution. It is their sworn duty to start impeachment hearings and investigation. There is overwhelming evidence for impeachment.

Cindy Sheehan collected over 8,000 personal handwritten letters from the public requesting Nancy Pelosi to impeach. I stood with her in front of the SF Federal Bldg. last Monday. Not a single major media bothered to show up. I hold Congress and the press accountable if these war criminals aren\’t impeached.

Either Pelosi doesn’t understand the point of impeaching Bush and Cheney, or she is worried about here own complicity in allowing the overreach of the Bush administration and funding the Iraq ocupation.

It is unlikely that the Senate would prosecute articles of impeachment, but impeachment hearings will get the truth into the records and make it clear to the next president that there are limits to executive power.

First of all, a clarification for Ms. Pelosi. Removal from office is only one possible outcome of impeachment. Impeachment by itself is merely the statement of charges against the accused. Afterwards, an investigation and trial takes place - and if the accused is found guilty of the charges, *then* he or she is removed from office.

If the outcome of the trial is “not guilty”, it’s completely possible for the accused to stay in office following impeachment. Witness Bill Clinton.

Ms. Pelosi’s projections of success/failure at this or whether or not it’s divisive miss the point. The point is serving justice. If the American people are demanding justice in the form of impeachment, she needs to begin the process. Otherwise she is complicit in the Bush administration’s crimes.

Keep this in mind, voters… November is coming, and Ms. Pelosi can be replaced.

However, when a majority of Americans want Bush and Cheney impeached for high crimes, Congress won’t allow it.

The people of this country support impeachment. Democrats overwhelmingly support impeachment, starting with Dick Cheney. Ms. Pelosi’s efforts to avoid impeachment hearings has done more to divide the American people, destroy the Democratic party, and betray the public trust than anyone short of Bush and Cheney themselves.

It’s time that we recognize Pelosi as the Bush operative she is. Her tacit approval of torture tells us that she is without principle. We don’t want Congress to be Pelosi’s mafia, we want accountability.

Reading over the 39 previous comments, I say “will no one defend Nancy Pelosi?” Well, I won’t either. Her oath requires her to defend the Constitution and she, and most of Congress, are not meeting the test. Unfortunately, that also includes my own Democratic congressman in Colorado who continues to make excuses for not doing the right thing. I predict a reckoning for those who ignore their duty. Until then, we need more “in-your-face” demonstrations of our anger, such as pickets on their front lawns.

When I ask voters who have a history of voting for Democratic candidates if they plan to participate in their Democratic precinct caucus on February 9, all too frequently their answer is, “No. Why should I? Bush and Cheney are the poster boys for impeachment. The impeachment statutes were written for them. They cry out for impeachment as no others have in memory. Yet Pelosi refuses to do what most of the American public as well as JUSTICE demands not because of the ridiculous excuses Pelosi makes but because Pelosi is complicit. Therefore Pelosi must be impeached as well as Bush and Cheney. I’ve contacted all of my representatives to let them know that if Bush and Cheney aren’t impeached I will not vote for another Democrat as long as I live. And I’ve voted a straight Democratic ticket for the past 35 years. I am serious. If these two criminals aren’t made to face impeachment for their crimes I will no longer participate in this charade. For, thanks to the complicit criminal Pelosi, we are no longer a two party system but merely a one party system with two names.

This started with the Reagan trajectory Barack alluded to recently, only he suggested that there was some accountability by the regime. Nothing of the kind, however, as we saw what corruption followed Reagan taking office. Starting with the destruction of the union movement, the looting of the savings and loans industry, Iran-Contra, murder and mayhem in central America. The assault on Iraq and the atrocities committed against that nation followed with continued activities in centrat America. Some amount of ease was felt during the Clinton years, however, the assaults continued under slick Willie, upon our people and the poor people around the world. The current regime took power right under our collective noses and we stood by as they proceeded to dismantle what took decades to build. Today, we have few friends around the world, our treasury is empty, we are in hock to all and sundry, our infrastructure crumbles whilst we paste the living daylights out of the Iraqis under the false flag operation that brought down the towers in NY. There is just too much criminality that has gone by whilst twats like Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid hypocritically wring their hands complaining that impeachment would be divisive and they don’t have the votes. They must take us for chumps. We don’t need to go to the polls to elect a leader this coming fall, it’s already been decided and the actors are going through their script just to make it appear legitimate. When the realization of where we stand whacks enough Americans out of their complacency, we may start to take actions that benefits our nation rather that destroy it.

impeachment is not something to be determined by political expedience, nor by questions of divisiveness.
What is the point of having impeachment in the constitution if it is not going to be utilized in situations where there is overwhelming evidence of impeagable offenses.

Well I have some new for you Fascism is Socialism at the point of a gun. And since a lot of people are jumping on the Universal Health Care’ (socialism) Wealth Redistribution (socialism)’ forced conversion from fossil fuel at the cost of our farms and price of said products (socialism)welfare, (socialism)

It appears that we have already lost the constitution. The executive branch ignores the people, congress and the LAW. The congress ignores the people and the law. I believe, as many have stated, that Pelosi, Reid and others in Congress (both Dems and Repugs) were complicit with Bush and his Administration in the assault on the Constitution and likewise they were complicit with the other crimes committed against us since Bush was allowed to steal the 2000 election as well as the 2004 election. Therefore, she cannot allow any impeachment proceedings. Our only hope is to throw all of the incumbents out of office as their terms come up for re-election. Pelosi’s is up for re-election in 2008. I know that Cindy Sheehan has stated that she will run against her. I wonder if there are any others willing to make a run for her office as well. My one fear is that there will be no 2008 election because the Administration will manufacture a terrorist threat and suspend elections until the threat is deemed to be over…when ever they say it’s over. I can’t believe that I am thinking this way about my own government, but that’s what I’m thinking.

It is time for House Leader Pelosi to step down and let a House Speaker who takes the Constitution seriously.

It is not a matter of “impeachment” being divisive but the facts show that Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney are causing a constitutional crisis that dwarfs Mr. Nixon’s “imperial” presidency which is divisive to what the voters see as a president who views himself above the law and has made a mockery of “the checks and balances” between our three, co-equal, branches of government.

It is incredible that the perpetrators of the worst and most illegal administration in history will not ever be accountable to the nation. What kind of example does this set for future leaders? Ms. Pelosi has overstepped her duties by closing the door to impeachment proceedings, against the wishes of a sizeable number of American citizens.

She has sullied her office and misrepresented it. In 2000, Al Gore refused to speak up for poor and minority children kicked out of pre-school, after-school, and health-care programs by then Texas Governor George W. Bush. Gov. Bush SLASHED funding for those programs, in order to - what else? - push through TAX CUTS for Texas’ wealthiest individuals and corporations. Those social programs were PROVEN to SAVE TEXAS TAXPAYERS MONEY, by giving children preventative health care and thus keeping them healthy and out of emergency rooms when untreated health problems became serious. The pre-school programs were proven to save the state money by keeping children productive and prepared for later schooling, reducing drop-out rates and later arrest and incarceration rates. It didn’t matter how effective those public education programs were; Governor George W. Vice President Gore topped this awful campaign shortcoming by REFUSING to FORCE the press, media, and public to confront Dick Cheney’s dealings with Saddam Hussein’s Iraq all through the late 1990s behind the back of the US enforced UN sanctions on Iraq. As Chairman and CEO of Halliburton corporation during that time, Mr. Cheney had used Halliburton’s European subsidiaries to sell Iraq millions of dollars worth of oil field equipment, even as US aircraft were bombing Iraqi positions in the no-fly zone, and Iraq was trying to shoot down those US jets. Even the Washington Post acknowledged that “Halliburton’s Iraq dealings are greater than Cheney has admitted”

And good riddance: justice delayed is jusice denied, and Senator Daschle NEVER put JUSTICE for ENRON FRAUD VICTIMS ahead of his own campaign and elections anemic calculations for mid-term election 2002 - which he lost despite his “get along, be nice” attitude towards Republican malfeasance!
And ofcourse as mentioned above, in 2004 John Kerry ran an incredibly anemic campaign, one that Washington Post cartoonist Pat Oliphant portrayed Kerry as “Rip van Winkle, SLEEPING through the entire campaign season,” Mr, Kerry too elitist, isolated, and unwilling to criticize a fellow Skull & Bones (Yale) fraternity brother, despite the long record of abuses of power I have tried to outline above.
Madam Speaker, you are now, already, part of that dismal Democratic record of giving a “Free Pass” to Republican malfeasance. After election 2004 was over, federal independent prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald won a dramatic perjury and obstruction of justice conviction against Presidential Senior Advisor, and (concurrently) Vice Presidential Chief of Staff Lewis ‘Scooter’ Libby. Mr. Libby was only a “Top 5″ member of the Bush-Cheny White House inner circle, as Vice President Cheney’s Chief of Staff Mr. Libby was only “outranked” in the White House hierarchy by Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney themselves, and White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card, and White House Political Affairs director Karl Rove. It was within this circle that the plan to “out” CIA “NOC” (non-official cover) undercover spy Valerie Plame’s identity, and you, Madam Speaker, joined Republicans in minimizing the criminality of this scheme. You did nothing to demand that President Bush NOT pardon Mr. Libby in the post-conviction phase of the trial; which sure enough President Bush did, giving a conditional commutation of sentence to Mr. Libby that still afforded him his 5th Amendment rights that effectively prevented prosecutors from pushing the conviction to its logical conclusion - because everyone understands that Washington career super-lawyer Mr. Libby would never in a million years have discussed the secret identity of a CIA operative to the Washington press, without strict orders from above.
Madam Speaker, ON THIS ONE ISSUE, ALONE, you are now complicit with OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE after the fact, and like Tom Daschle and Joe Lieberman in 2002 re the Enron scandal, you are DENYING JUSTICE to American’s harmed by the White House’s abuse of power.
Additionally, as leader of the Democratic Party, you failed to take notice or make any move re Christine Jennings loss of her election efforts to win a congressional seat in Florida District 13, Katherine Harris’ old seat. Florida Republicans were so appalled at the prospect of losing this “safe” Republican seat (which Ms. Harris would have won re-election to had she not given up the seat to run an improbable senate campaign)that they instructed District 13 electronic voting machines to swallow 13,000 THIRTEEN THOUSAND uncounted votes, so-called “undervotes” in a congressional, off-year election. Neighbouring districts had “undervote” tallies in the low one-thousand range, but you, Speaker Pelosi, are completely unconcerend that possibly more than 10,000 Florida voters had their vote rejected in 2006 in one local congressional election, alone.
Madam Speaker, I have tried to lay out the case, that at every opportunity, at every turn, at every case of clear and present Republican, White House abuse of power, you have sided with Republican talking-points to minimize the scandal. That makes you part of the Republican obstruction of justice process. You are repeating the sad, anemic, and pathetic “leadership” of Al Gore, Tom Daschle, and John Kerry, and in doing so you are taking after Joe Lieberman, the AIPAC and war-lobby super-lobbyist.
Madam Speaker, your refusal to hold hearings on impeachment is a clear case of arrogance and self-importance. It is not about you, Speaker Pelosi, but about American justice and the primacy of the Constitution over abuses of power. And, finally, in refusing to hold Bush-Cheney abuses of power to the light of day, you are already helping them prepare for a restoration, by denying American voters and citizens of the true facts, of the true extent of their malfeasance and abuse of power. You are forcing Democratic voters to dig deeply into their pockets, to undo the Republican PR spin that “nothing is wrong here, any problems in the war in Iraq, in the US economy, in the war-on-terror, are the fault of Democratic leaders obstructing the president’s leadeship.”

Madam Speaker, you are enabling Republican campaigns and public perceptions not only in this election, but for elections for decades to come.
As such, you are firmly aligned with the Republican neo-con war and abuse of powers agenda, and against your own Democratic voters.

While I would never want to life the chaos of the impeachment of Bill Clinton, I certainly recall that no one back then was concerned about the division it would cause. And this was for actions that I felt were did not warrant impeachment. The censure he received for lying about Monica Lewinski were a proper and measured response.

That being said.. I think Pelosi’s response is utterly fantastic. But I feel that she is doing this in order no to upset the applecart, and derail and otherwise Democratic”shoo-in” for president. With focus on the war and the economy, the Republicans don’t have a chance. But with an impeachment, especially in this last year, those chances are not nearly as high. So politics plays a part. She is right… we will never get them convicted of any crime. There would be WAY TOO MUCH PARTISAN OBSTRUCTION.

But now we have TRUE WAR CRIMINALS that have lead our country down a dangerous path, and they will be leaving in a year, without any accountability of what they have done.

If it is felt that they committed high crimes and misdemeanors that would warrant impeachment, then they should face impeachment trials.

Pelosi and Reid do not deserve to be returned to their Congressional seats let alone their leadership positions. They have been complete and utter failures in that they are afraid to take the action that the voters who put them into their positions demand. It is time to elect people who listen to their constituents.
Politial punishment and publish shame should be delivered to California and Nevada voters who return them to Congress.

Violations of the Geneva Conventions, the Nuremburg Charter, the Uniform Code of Military Justice, Title 18, US criminal code, the Clean Water Act, the Clean Air Act, the UN agreement on genocide, lying to Congress and the public,, war profiteering, and violations of their oaths of office add up to high crimes and misdemeanors, no matter what Ms. Pelosi says. She has a legal responsibility to enforce US law.
She has said that she considers herself a “leader”. Well, a judas goat is a leader and that’s not much of a distinction.
Ms. Pelosi, you are a representative of the people who pay you. Accepting their money while failing to represent them is a crime.
Let there be no mistake, this criminal invasion of Iraq is mass murder, and Pelosi is complicit. No wonder she’s reluctant to pursue Justice.

The Democratic leadership continues to disappoint. Reed and Pelosi need to be removed from office for not upholding the Constitution. Our leaders must be held accountable. These criminals must be brought to justice. If Clinton could have impeachment proceedings brought against him because of a BJ, it makes no sense to sit on all the instances of constitutional violations by the current individuals occupying the White House.

This once-great nation has been “divided” since the Florida ballot scam of 2000. The nation has moved so far to the Neocon Right that any compromise that the Democrats are able to achieve still produces the conservative agenda. Perhaps donating to Cindy sheehan’s campaign and supporting her efforts will send a message that the Constituion must always be upheld, and we can still be a nation of laws.

The tragic message to future Republican presidents is that you can ignore the Constitution, start needless wars, and harm our world leadership ability, and the Democrats will be too timid to impeach you because it might be “divisive”.

I’m sure if she would say Yes, the rest of the House would follow and the proceedings could start. Quite a few Senators are already getting petitions, Kucinich, Wexler, Conyer, even Murtha wouldn’t back down. She needs to say yes and other COngresspersons will follow her. BUT she just isn’t the leader we thought she would be!
Hopefully Hillary will do something once she gets the position of President. Even though he can’t be impeached from the presidency once he leaves he can be tried fo high crimes and treason once he leaves. (I hope)…

Don’t people realize you can’t impeach a president just because you don’t like him and think that he’s a bad person? Ethical investigations are more than called for, surely, but impeachment proceedings that drag the entire federal government through the mud are hardly the best way to inspire bipartisan cooperation, as Ms. Pelosi so astutely assesses.

Pelosi says it would be too “Divisive.” Practically everything Cheney (Bush) does is horribly divisive. I stand full of outrage today at the very low standard of US governance that Pelosi now endorses. Martin Luther King didn’t worry about “Divisive” or “Enough Votes” before he courageously did the right thing.

If the Democrats had the integrity and morality to push for impeachment, the hearings would be so revealing we might just get enough votes.

I have been a Democrat all my life, and after Clinton and now Pelosi, I am out shopping and I urge all other Democrats to jump ship. The Democratic party has not courage to do the right thing.

Perhaps it would be better to let Bush and Cheney finish their terms and then bring them up on war crimes charges, perjury, corruption, etc… It’s debatable whether a sitting president or VP can face criminal or civil charges while in office and they’d just run the clock out anyway, but once they’re out, they’re fair game.

I have written my Democrat congressman in New York four times urging him to sign on to Wexler’s impeachment hearings. He doesn’t respond. No action.

Many of us US citizens writing here gave Pelosi and these congressmen/women our votes
