Huckabee challenges McCain to one more debate

huckabee-wisconsin.jpgTYLER, Texas - The race for the Republican nomination isn’t over yet, and Mike Huckabee would like one more chance to match wits with front-runner John McCain before a potentially decisive round of contests next week.  Huckabee, a former Arkansas governor, challenged McCain to a debate before March 4, when Texas, Ohio, Vermont and Rhode Island hold primaries that could clinch the nomination for McCain.

“Now that the race for the Republican nomination is down to just the two of us, I believe this is the time for a real discussion about our vision for the future of this great country,” Huckabee wrote.

(Actually, the race isn’t just down to the two of them. Texas Rep. Ron Paul is still running and might not appreciate being left off the stage. But we digress.)

Huckabee has scaled back his campaigning efforts since Feb. 5, when a string of coast-to-coast primary victories made McCain the all-but-certain nominee. Another debate would give him a chance to show off his folksy charisma and stand on equal footing with a candidate who has amassed far more delegates and dollars.

At a press conference in Cincinnati, McCain did not rule out another debate.

“We’ve had 16 debates since this campaign began and I’ve been engaged in every one of them, so I’d certainly consider it,” McCain said.

I’d like to see a debate. This is America right? What’s wrong with hearing for ourselves what they stand for? I for one, want to know that Mccain, the “presumptive nominee” as the press has labeled him, stands for more than war, slack immigration and gay marriage. All of which are important issues we face, and yet Mccain only addresses war, war, war.
Huckabee is being ignored by the Mccain camp to debate. you can sign the petition at http://www.mustdebate.com

This election isn’t over till WE say it’s over!

McCain has shown many ideals leaning more to the left than right. But each time McCain confronts true conservatives, he learns a little more about what will be expected of him as president on a conservative ticket. I believe the debate would be great for McCain and for the Republican Party. And it certainly wouldn’t hurt hearing Huckabee’s wisdom on issues at least one more time. Let’s debate!

Huck would pummel McCain in a one-on-one, but I do agree it should include Paul to be fair.

Well, Mr. Huckabee. There are three Republican Candidates running. As Dr. Ron Paul predictions regarding the economy come to fruition, the other candidates don’t want him around to show them how out of touch their economic policies are. Of course maybe the fact Huckabee can’t count to 3 says it all.

- Posted by John Not

That’s awfully presumptuous of Huckabee, isn’t it?

“…Just the two of us”?

It really is a shame that the GOP candidate will end up being either a rabid and corrupt militarist or a homophobic theocrat. Neither will be able to compete with the appeal of Obama, should he win the Democratic nomination, and none of them will respect the Constitution.

Our freedoms in this country have seen a steady erosion because of the complacency and ignorance of the public. We maintain unsustainable foreign, military, social and economic policies with no actual solutions emerging. I hope someday the encroachment finally becomes too much to bear, and people will educate themselves, but until that time, get ready, because our way of life will continue to change for the worse.

Mr. McCain could both blow the dems out of the water, and position himself as the most progressive, strongest leader for positive change in the last 60 years by debating. He could make sure with Mr. Huckabee that they debate issues, without attacking, and show (as compared to the dems) how they (or the ‘new’ GOP) will do business by listening, debating (the issue-not the person)maybe compromising, maybe not, but actually listening to and considering other points of view as valid, even when disagreeing. As an independent voter, I keep waiting for someone to step up so I don’t have to vote for Nader. McCain would truly solidify his base, if they felt he was listening and considering. If, even with victory at hand, he had the leadership to CONTINUE listening (which is what we need our next pres to do) and show that those with less than a majority still do count (a unique tenet of our constitution), All of us will start to think different, and actually BELIEVE positve change will happen. Leaving the Dems who talk of a different gov’t, and continue with the same dialog of old, seen as the establishment problem. Think about it..

Mike Huckabee has not scaled his campaign down. He is campaigning just as hard as he did back in Iowa. The press is doing a huge disservice to the American people by not covering his campaign properly!!! This man is the hope for the future of our country. Is the press THAT set on having a Democrat in the White House in November??? I would like to see just ONE article that is accurate and fair towards Governor Huckabee.

- Posted by Linda Rayborn

I would love to see the debate! McCain will attempt to avoid it. Huckabee is a far better candidate. In previous campaigns, after the majority of candidates quit, the machine vastly ignored Huckabee. McCain’s reference to “the other 16″ debates is a laugh. Those gave each man a few comments. In the smaller debates, Huckabee was ignored - afraid of what he will say: the IRS needs to go, the Federal Reserve is raping - yes, raping - the United States taxpayer. We must put heavy pressure on McCain to debate: or he will avoid it.

The media should prevent a debate between John McCain and Mike Huckabee at all costs. The media produced McCain’s Republican primary victories by their one-sided reporting, and to have Mike Huckabee debate circles around McCain on national TV would reflect badly on the media’s judgment. And as we know, it is the media’s interests that must be served.

- Posted by David Anderson

Senator McCain has had the chance to participate in those 16 previous debates, while Gov. Huckabee only gets asked a few questions at best. Let’s hear from them one on one, debating their ideas. If the senator does not think he can win a debate against Huckabee, then he will never win against Obama. Mr. McCain this is your shot to secure my vote not just on March 4 but also in November!

- Posted by Adam

Mike Huckabee was practically ignored in the earlier debates. He should have a chance to be heard. McCain should also welcome the airtime if he is sure that he has the nomination. He has nothing to lose and a great deal of free publicity to gain. Get on with the debate!

Thank you for accurate journalism, mentioning that Ron Paul, is also still in the race. My hat is off to all of those who report the truth, not shape opinion.

- Posted by Chris

he has to debate mike.
period.
GO MIKE!!!!

- Posted by sam

Why is the no media coverage on this? No news about Huckabee on CNN or Fox. Are they trying to keep the American public from even knowing Mike Huckabee is still in the race? I appreciate your article. A debate would be great!

The Fair Tax is the most ‘conservative’ idea anyone has talked about this whole election, because the IRS, that administers the income tax / withholding, is the most oppressive, intrusive, socialist institution in our country.

Huckabee is an ardent, articulate supporter of the Fair Tax, and I believe he really “gets it”. It is the best hope on the horizon for giving power back to the people, and waking people up to the stranglehold the current tax system has on the people and the economy.

- Posted by Deb

I have to give props to the Huckabee people. What a outrage to be ignored by the media or taken lightly as a canidate for the highest and most honored position in our goverment. Imagine that! Mr. Huckabee is of the same opionion as the media, last two remaining, last time I looked there were still three, but its ok to ignore the canidates if it serves your purpose. Good luck, Mr. Huckabee, getting MacCain in front of you. Please people do your homework. There is still time to make a choice for America. By the way the fair tax bill has been in committee for two years now think that might be a dead issue, Repeal the 16th amendment might have a better shot. Huckabee for President, What a Hoot!!!

- Posted by poppatml

Yes, thank you Andy Sullivan for reporting the truth. Not something we see often enough these days.

- Posted by Dave

Ron Paul better be included in the debate! Good journalism andy for correcting the 2 candidate comment…

- Posted by craig

It’s pretty offensive to hear Huckabee stating that the race is down to 2 — when there are 3 in the race.

If Huckabee wants to claim that it is not over until it is over, then he should claim that it is not over for Ron Paul either.

- Posted by Carol

Let’s have a debate!

- Posted by scottwww

While Huckabee runs out of money, Ron Paul’s campaign continues to gain donations. The donations from brand new supporters, who are just now turning to his message — be if from frustration or desperation — are rapidly accelerating.

Once people finally listen — finally — they find Paul to be the man that deserved their support from the very beginning.

I’m one of those….

- Posted by Helen

I think McCain ought to debate Huckabee because if he doesn’t it’s going to look like he’s afraid. America really doesnt want a president who’s afraid of anything/anyone now do we? Either McCain is a man of his convictions or he isn’t,

- Posted by sue

Yes, we need a debate! Should McCain refuse to debate Huckabee, he is showing that he is afraid to face a challange. That is not the kind of man we need in the position of president. And Ron Paul should be included if he would like. He has quit campaigning however, so the reason for Huckabee to say 2 instead of 3 is understandable. He certainly deserves the chance after the way he was treated in the last “debate” at the Reagan Library. What a joke that was! Advice: Chill out Ron Paul folks! That is why his ideas never took off. He seems to only have angry people following him. I never saw him on the debates that he wasn’t about to have a stroke over his positions. The U.S. president cannot be like that. Honesty and strength yes. Anger,no.

- Posted by Paula

People, I don’t like it that Mike left out Paul either, but face it Huck has very little chance at winning. Ron Paus has no chanse. Pauls only chanse is to wait and see if Huck keeps McCain from getting 1,191. Then it goes to the convention, but it won’t be Paul work that got him to the convention, it will be Hucks.

- Posted by dust

Dust:

I kindly disagree that it will be just Huck’s work that got it to the convention. It will have been the work of all the candidates with non-McCain delegates, most notably Romney’s. Where are these delegates going to turn…? Are they bonded to endorse McCain just because Romney did? No.

I’m all for Huckabee staying in. The longer the nomination process goes on, the more Ron Paul’s message gets out there. He is attracting young voters who aren’t yet addicted to debt.

- Posted by Eric

It’s not a debate without Ron Paul. He’s the only candidate with an in depth knowlege of the economy and sensible foreign policy AND he has just as much of a chance as Huckster of getting the nomination now. This is a blatant snub by Huckleberry, who’s would be scared to death to go one on one with Ron Paul.

Latest news, John McCain didnt make the decision not to debate Huckabee he was told by the Republican party establishment that pulls his strings not to. This goes to show John McCain is going to be a “puppet” if he gets in the White House.

McCain will always have to ask permission on every decision if he is in the White House. McCain’s clout to create “Change” will be virtually “zero”. And worse yet, the Democrats will feed on this situation all during the general election campaign saying McCain will only be a puppet in the White House.

Just to validate this comment, look what Bill Cunnigham said about John McCain on CNN. Cunningham says he was told by party officials to give the audience red meat to warm up the crowd that came to see McCain. See the key word “party officals” told him to do this. Do you see the connection here, McCain has absolutely no decision making permission. He will constantly have to get “permission” from the party big wigs that smoke their big cigars in the back room counting their money and power.

The only true conservative that has run in this presidential race is charismatic leader Mike Huckabee. A down to earth, honest, humble man looking out for the needs of the American people and not the party big wigs. He sticks his neck out on the line, he does what is right for the common American citizen. Mike Huckabee want’s to “Share” his power with the American people, but the party big wigs control McCain and they want to “Show” their power to the American people.

Don’t let this election be taken away from the American people, vote for Mike Huckabee. He is on your side. For 10 1/2 years as Governor of Arkansas, he never had a big picture of him on the Arkansas capital hall, each week he had the picture of an ordinary Arkansas citizen in that picture frame. He always reminded his staff, that “we” work for the citizens, they are the boss and we should never ever forget that.

Vote for Mike Huckabee, the only crusader of the American people.

This is merely the latest Sign of the Huckster. In earlier renditions Huck decided that the Income Tax and Federal Reserve needed to go… after he heard these ideas from Ron Paul. Of course, a debate is appropriate between all 3 candidates; McCain and Huckabee, the 2 RINOs and Dr. Paul, representing the true Republican legacy.

- Posted by Rawleston

McCain should debate Dr. Paul. Wait, on second thought, that probably isn’t a good idea… McCain would get taken to town by the good doctor!

- Posted by Jake Larsen

Ok McKing…Time to PROVE yourself…DEBATE Huckabee!!

What are you afraid of? You only have TWO issues in which you differ from the enemy…earmarks and the Iraq war (although McCain vs Mcain on youtube looks like even YOU do not know where you stand!)

A two issue difference, does not a president make!

- Posted by Storm

Ron Paul knows more about the economy than either of the “front runners.” He should be there so we can have some sense in the debate.

MSNBC cancelled that Feb 28th debate which had all three scheduled. Now that the debate is cancelled, they’ll just schedule a new one so they can exclude Ron Paul.

No matter. Go Ron Go!

- Posted by John Doe

I say we all email the McCain “camp” at

http://www.johnmccain.com/Contact/

and DEMAND he debate Mike Huckabee! WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE AS ONE UNIFIED GROUP!!!! How can McCain ignore a mass emailing from the American people??? It would take each of us a few minutes to do this…do we want a debate badly enough?? YOU BET WE DO! EMAIL JOHN MCCAIN AND LET’S GET THIS THING SNOWBALLING!!!!

- Posted by EuropeanTraveler

I’ll sign that debate petition — provided the debate includes Ron Paul.

As for Huckabee not getting deserved coverage: welcome to Paul’s world.

- Posted by Jeff Bubb

So … Senator McCain … you don’t have time to debate Gov. Huckabee? I believe that the Republican voters deserve to hear you differentiate yourself from your opponent Mike Huckabee on the issues that are very important to the American people. This is an unbelievable display of arrogance on the part of John McCain. He is in essence telling the people of Texas, Ohio, Rhode Island, Vermont, and the rest of the states that have yet to vote that their votes are not worth his time to debate the issues with Gov. Mike Huckabee. If John McCain was serious about asking the conservative voters to give him a chance; this is his chance. If Mr. McCain is the conservative that he claims to be, you would think that he would jump at the chance to finally debate the one true conservative that is left in this race.

John McCain you haven’t won the nomination yet. Debate Mike Huckabee!

- Posted by Dan Cramer

If McCain has the nomination locked up, what has he got to lose with 1 debate? Free air time for him. But if he refuses he looks bad.

- Posted by matt

The GOP and McCain have risen to the level of their incompetence! Go Huckabee!

- Posted by David, Oregon City

If there’s no more republican debates, then the media and McCain are wanting to ignore the rest of the republican party and are essentially saying that we are of no importance and they just want to move on. How sad. When in fact, McCain’s just afraid and the media knows it will cause a stir in the republican race, and they don’t want to talk about anyone but Obama. If this is what we can expect from McCain, then he won’t get my vote even if he does get the 1191 delegates.

- Posted by Tim

Dr. Paul needs to be included in this and ALL debates.

- Posted by Robert

Regarding the mass media showing fair and balanced coverage of all presidential candidates, there is a law on the books that requires this. The problem is that during Reagan’s time, the congress amended the law to exclude news casts, interviews and debates. So what’s left you ask? Game shows and cartoons. So, you Huckabee and Ron Paul fans who do not receive a fair shake at getting your candidates word out are at the hands of who ever pulls the strings of the mass media, being General Electric and News Corporation.

- Posted by Jon

If Huckabee, McCain and the news media had any integrity they would include Dr. Ron Paul in the debate. It is obvious to anyone with any objectivity that Dr. Ron Paul would be do a lot better if the corporate owned news media had not black him out and if there had not been any proved any election fraud.
Dr. Ron Paul unabashedly speaks the truth, which we need to hear.
He is the only candidate with the historical perspective, economic and philosohical policies which can save America.
McCain should be further investigated:

[…] wait and see if Huck keeps McCain from getting 1,191. Then it goes to the convention, but it won’t be Paul work that got him to the convention, it will be Hucks.

This is the kind of ignorance that marks Huckabee as a pretender in the political process. 1191 is ONLY important AT the RNConvention, DURING the vote(s). There WILL be a convention, period. And given that most states have a large contingent of unpledged delegates, even on the first ballot, and state RP organizations are starting to release ex-candidates’ pledged delegates to vote freely, there is NO way to know how many delegates will vote for who. It is even possible, and has certainly happened before, that delegates will break their pledge.

If Huckabee exits the campaign at some point before September, based on McCain “getting” the mythical magic number, then he would show that he truly has no grasp of organizational procedure, or even rudimentary logic.

If he should drop out, it looks like it would only because of that reason or because of money troubles. (unless McCain’s money and FEC-related ethics troubles sink McCain first, that is)

And if Huckabee drops out, that will leave only 1 active primary campaigner, Ron Paul, since McCain has already presumed he has the nomination and has “gone national”. Huckabee supporters would then probably split between those diehard war supporters who are willing to overlook McCain’s late dove-to-hawk conversion, and those who place abortion as a higher priority. The former would likely go to McCain, and the latter would to to Paul who has a much stronger anti-abortion stance and legislation to back it up.

Now, THAT would be an interesting convention!

- Posted by NDN

Ron Paul MUST be included in the upcoming debate..If it happens that is..He really is the only Honest one of the whole lot.

- Posted by JonLiberty

McCain needs to either debate or get out. I can’t believe how he is spitting on the GOP and refusing to debate. He’s handing this over to the Democrats.

Why the h*** won’t he debate? What is he hiding? This is rediculous, we’re going to be left with NADER as the only option.

- Posted by klb in Ohio

Debating Huckabee will not change the Democrates, who have their heads stuck in the sand but might help those of us who are totally confused about where McCain stands as a Republican. I would like to hear more from Huckabee because we certainly aren’t getting anything from the media.
Having a Baptist minister running for president is about as scary as having a Catholic (President Kennedy). We need to be electing someone with values and ideas for change, not someone who will be part of the “same old, same old.”

- Posted by Dorothy Rowley

Huckabee certainly provides a breath of fresh Spring air, compared to what we’ve been hearing! Critics have continuously brought up the point that even if he won every single delegate from now on, he could still not win enough to nail the nomination. To that, I ask, “So? Neither will McCain?”

Mike’s voice needs to be heard, and the best way of doing that is to have a debate, head to head. It’s amazing that he has come this far, against so much money supported by the likes of Romney and his supporters, as well as extremely biased 527’s like Club for Growth.

Given that McCain and Huckabee have been on such good terms, I’d have to agree that the best debate forum would be a Lincoln-Douglas style debate — no moderation given. I urge everyone to continue pressing for such an encounter.

- Posted by Brian Pearson

McCain may be a coward but he isn’t stupid. He knows that Huckabee will clean his clock in any debate. I don’t blame him for running scared.
