Some of the families of the five prostitutes murdered by Steve Wright have called for the reintroduction of the death penalty, which was effectively abolished in Britain over 40 years ago.
Such calls usually surface in the wake of criminal atrocities when feelings are running high but surveys consistently show a considerable public demand for the reintroduction of capital punishment.
The likelihood of the rope coming back is remote at the moment: all three main parties are opposed to the idea – some apparently more than others — and Britain’s membership of the European Union and its commitment to the European Convention on Human Rights would not allow it.
But are the enormity of some crimes, particularly terrorist attacks over the last decade, and a widespread perception that courts and laws in Britain are too soft on criminals beginning to influence the debate?
Is there a place for capital punishment on the UK statute books?

Yes, Capital Punishment should be bought back to the UK - there are far to many crime’s being committed, that i feel should be dealt with by Capital Punishment & not just a slap on the hand & told not to do it again - which is happening in our courts today…….
- Posted by Ade KingNo. Absolutely not. All those who think it should ought to be willing for their lives to be taken should convictions be overturned - that is people proven not guilty after all. Though, I will go the other way and say that life really should mean life and that more prisons should be built. Ideally, by prisoners themselves in hard labour.

We have seen enough cases of miscarriage of justice to know that the police are capable of framing people to get a result when they are under pressure and juries are sometimes swayed by their emotions rather than the evidence.
The correct answer to satisfy all sides is that a life sentence must mean life in prison - no days out at the cinema; no release on “compassionate” grounds, just stay there until dead UNLESS new evidence leads to the verdict being overturned.

- Posted by AjitI have to answer this question with a firm “No”.
The most awful problem is the virtual certainty that an innocent person will eventually be executed. Many point to DNA evidence as a solution to this, but in many cases it will not be useful or conclusive. For example, in a domestic murder, what good is it to say the murderers’ DNA is at the scene? Of course it is, they live there!
We also need to consider the effect on the murderers’ family and relatives, they are innocent and will suffer the loss of a loved one. Should these relatives suffer for something they didn’t do?
The death penalty has little impact on the overall crime rate as it will, firstly, only apply for a minority of offences and secondly it will not always be used.
The death penalty is usually proceeded with a spell in prison on a “Death Row”, this can last for years in some cases so the argument based on reduced costs to the taxpayer is less powerful than you would think.

No-one, whether an individual or a state, has the right to take a person’s life. That is the guiding principle, and that is why we punish murderers by locking them away from society, and attempting to rehabilitate them where possible.
There is no ’slap on the wrist’ for murder, and no evidence that capital punishment works as an effective deterrent; the USA (300m pop.) had 15,000 gun-related murders alone in 2006, whereas the UK had 50 (60m pop.). The difference? Access to firearms, and the different values within each society, not the threat of execution. It just doesn’t work, and it is grossly inhumane. If we sink to the same level as the murderers, then every citizen is guilty.
- Posted by RobertNo because some of the worst of the worst, like Harold Shipman or Fred West kill themselves in prison as a way of escaping from their troubled states of mind and feelings of guilt. Why help them to escape from a lifetime of guilt?
- Posted by marcusThis is an argument for the death penalty so see what you think of it; heads of murderers should be severed in public and paraded on spikes as a warning to would be murderers. Murderers don’t deserve to be executed “humanely” as killing in itself is an inhumane act and should be carried out by barbarians. Allow me to explain; let other murderers tear their limbs off and film it for all to see as a deterrent.
- Posted by marcusWe are not animals that run in a pack, but if we were then people like. Steve Wrght would have been spotted very early. There would have been no drama involved. He would have been driven out of the pack to die or he would have been challenged earlier and become sub serviant and found his role in society or died.
- Posted by William GordonWe are not wolves but monkeys, and we have been given the gift of reason We have learned to live in tribes it works for us as does the pack of wolves works for them
In the world of the wolf and the world of the monkey there is no hatred If you cant fit in you die

all three main parties are opposed to the idea
Perhaps political parties should be banned too?
Then, maybe, just maybe the taxpayers could elect someone who will do the voters bidding.
Ask this question when it is not a knee jerk reaction to a case in the news.
- Posted by Mike with a ropeThe level of violence in this country has increased unabated since the final abolition of the death penalty for murder in 1965. The life term that replaced it proved to be a political sleight of hand, because in fact “life” didn’t mean more than 10 or 11 years for a “standard” murder. The result was that murder was massively downgraded as an offence - you could serve a longer term for importing cocaine or robbing a bank, and successive governments connived at a comprehensive degradation of standards of behaviour, culminating in the last ten years, which have been utterly disastrous in terms of law and order.
Unless radical steps are taken to introduce a serious deterrent element to sentencing for violent offences (including, for example, a mandatory term of, say, 25 years imprisonment for murder) I think it is absolutely inevitable that capital punishment will be reintroduced in this country within the next ten or twenty years.
- Posted by MatthewNo. This is a morality issue and all other points are secondary, including the infinite grief of the victim’s loved ones. We have a right to protect ourselves from proven threats, but that can be accomplished by imprisonment. The question of how we protect ourselves from a murderer should not include capital punishment… the taking of a human life that is not immediately threatening the life of another is not right.
- Posted by Tom NimsYES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Posted by d jonesNo,as long as life means life with no privleges and kept in solitary confinement. This should be enough for justice to have been served. If they are not happy with the conditions they reserve the right to take their own life by starvation.
- Posted by Cy NicalThis may seem harsh but no less than taking someones life when it is never 100% sure that the right person as been punished.
You can’t pardon a dead person.
in cases where there is absolutely certainty (confession/video/witnesses) then surely we must bring back capital punishment as a deterrent.since liberal attitudes have prevailed over last few decades so has violent crime increased.its a slippery slope otherwise, with the situation only getting worse.
- Posted by m.davisYes, yes & yes.
100% conviction = put them to rest.
How dare they think they can go around carrying out these sick acts and then spend so many years in prison with all hospitality paid for.
- Posted by Total justiceyes. the death penalty should be brought backimmediatly. a referendum would support it. but this yellow-bellied government would not approve.
- Posted by john crossleyYes of course it should!!
- Posted by Gerald CPeoples morals should be offended by the crime committed, not by the justice meted out.
If just one innocent life is saved by the re-introduction of the death penalty then it is more than worth it.
That life could be yours - let’s deal with it!!
yes. i believe in certain EXCEPTIONAL cases there should be capital Punishment. example if that it can be proved beyond a shadow of a doubt e.g. a confession, a video confirming the persons identity or forensic evidence proving that this person is guilty of everything he/she is charged with then i believe that there is grounds for capital Punishment
- Posted by JamesThis is a definite yes. We as a state/ and a country are spending way to much money on keeping these people off the streets. They live in relative comfort, fed, sheltered, and with medical care. We are wasting tons of money when we could just put them down and no longer have that burden. If they are charged with no question and proof then capital punishment is a yes for them. Should most defiantly be put back in place.
- Posted by Ashleyyes I THINK PEOPLE ARE FOR GETTING THAT NOW`A DAYS WE HAVE THINGS LIKE DandA AND WE ARE A LOT MORE HIGH TEC THAN THE 1940`S 50`S 60`S EYE 4 AN EYE. WHY SHULD WE AS TAX PAYERS PAY TO KEEP THESE PEOPLE ALIVE WARM AND FED. IF YOU`R DOG KILED A HUMAN BEING IT WOULD BE PUT DOWN . THESE PEOPLE ARE NO MORE THAN ANIMALS THEM SELFS WHY SHOULD WE TREAT THEM ANY DIFFERENT.
- Posted by THERESAyes thay shod i think every one how braks the law yes i think that its rong but i has to be done the evei needs to stop in the wold \!!!!
- Posted by samanthaof course we should have the death penalty. you may argue about the offenders’ rights, but as soon as u commit a crime like killing someone, u have bypassed THEIR rights and so u should also have none. Human rights are just a thing that lawers can use to get their clients off scot-free. i also believe that the punishment should be made worse by having Death Row, where offenders will stay for years knowing they will die and will have to live with it. if they take suicide, then thats one less lethal injection to use. it would also ease the strain on our overcrouded prisons. Thank you
- Posted by JamesYes the death penalty shoud deffinetly be brought back, it will stop a lot of innocent people being murdered. At the moment they know that they will be sent to a nice comfortale prison wlth everything laid on for them, while the relatives of the poor people murdered are left destryed by their actions. I think it is that they forfit their own lives as they have taken someone elses life. How dare they live a life for a life I think
- Posted by GraemeThis debate could go on for ever, questions of whether the right person is executed etc, however in cases where this 100% certainty, DNA, unquestionable video evidence etc, then yes bring back the deterrent of losing your life. In cases of doubt, then “life means life” is the laternative. At present it seems to Me, that you’d have to bribe a judge to get a custodial sentance, all tarrifs should be increased across the board, and magistrates, judges etc, should be advised by Government to use maximums not minimums, there’s little point in blaming police, if they are making the arrests but have no say over sentancing.
- Posted by GordonOh my God, that’s heartless he should be executed immediately, he could be dangerous to other inmates.
- Posted by IncI think he should because if he has the right to take them 5 girls life then he should be punished by death and let him feel the pain them girl did make his family sufur just like those girls family had to
