Noddy and Big Ears had their makeovers years ago – now it’s the turn of the Famous Five.
In a new Disney Channel series, the sons and daughters of Enid Blyton’s four adventurers are back in manga cartoon form as multicultural, techno-hip dudes on the trail of eco-evil with the ever-faithful dog Timmy. No room for ginger beer and jolly japes here.
What next? Richmal Crompton’s “William” as an asbo-carrying hoodie?
Were you a Famous Five fan? And what do you think of the idea of updating them for the 21st century?

I think the famous five & all of Enid Blytons works should remain as they were written. Enid Blytons works have that timeless charm of a bygone age and should be preserved as a part of the history of childrens literature.
If people want a modern team of 5 kids and a dog then write new stories and scripts.
- Posted by LynneI loved Enid Blyton growing up and whilest I believe its got to be relevant to kids in 2008, I really hope its not americanised like Winnie the Pooh. I have absolutely nothing against America but these are British classics and they should stay that way!!
- Posted by katie hardyi think its a good idea to bring the famous five up to date
- Posted by martin batesOf course they should stay in the forties. Those books are still popular among kids anyway, so the only “need” to bring them “up to date” is the need for profits. Having and promoting the originals, which were then contemporary novels, means that kids can read what are now historical novels in a sense: they allow young people to read of how characters were back then, what their surroundings were like, the technology that surrounded them, the language they used, the types of food they ate - they’re historical documents, social history.
- Posted by Andy ArmitageThey should definately stay in the 1940’s.The Famous Five books were all based around the innocence of youth that is no longer with us in this age.To bring it up to date would make it an even bigger parody than Comic Strips Presents-Five Go Mad In…… spoofs.
