Liberal Democrat candidate Brian Paddick admits he lacks the name-recognition status enjoyed by Ken Livingstone and Boris Johnson in what many regard as a personality contest to be elected Mayor of London.
But the man once styled “the UK’s most senior openly gay police officer” told me at a Reuters Newsmaker event that he plans to boost his personal image in the countdown to the May 1 vote.
“I was a police officer for 30 years. And what we are taught in the police is to give our evidence in court without showing any emotion, any animation, absolutely deadpan, dead straight,” he said.
“It’s going to take me a while to come out of my shell, but I think we are going to see in the next week or so what that means.
“There are a few surprises coming up and I am sure people by the end of this campaign will be saying that I am just as much a personality as the other two.”
What can he mean?

I have been an admirer of Brian’s for some years now and I think he is a fine person with an admirable respect for humanity.
I do think he would make a excellent Mayor and if I could I would vote for him - but I live in Cambridge.
He’s gutsy, intelligent, thoughtful, experienced, wise, kind, humanitarian and will not put up with cant, nonsence or abuse of any kind. He’s a real warrior for the good of mankind.
I think his moral strengths make him more qualified than the others.
Best of luck to Brian!
