Week five was a week for surprises.
Team leaders Claire Young and Lucinda Ledgerwood both survived, and survived well after a complete transformation on previous weeks.
Alan Sugar, and everyone else, including Claire and Lucinda themselves, predicted they were in danger of being fired in the Apprentice boardroom.
But Claire turned down the volume and encouraged her team to victory, while Lucinda’s laid back approach, which had proved so annoying to her teammates during previous episodes, found a natural home as project leader.
Even Helene managed to put in a good word for her, before resuming normal service at the end.
I have a soft spot for Lucinda, and I suspect a lot of people outside the boardroom do too, because everybody inside it hates her.
But she showed initiative and a cool head — and even made a success of making an unlikely flavoured ice cream, avocado and chilli.
Shame she was let down by those self-proclaimed “sizzling hot superstars” in the sales team, Jennifer Maguire and Lindi Mngaza.
Jennifer, it appears is not so hot. Rather cold in fact — as Sugar’s aide, Nick, said: “I’ve always felt that there’s a bit of a chill in the air between you and the others.”
In the end, they didn’t “kick arse” with the opposition, as they had boasted, but shot themselves in the foot with their supreme confidence.
You need self-confidence to sell, Lindi said. But too much, and there is the danger you become complacent — and lose.
