Does Glasgow spell the end of Gordon Brown?

gordon.jpgGordon Brown has woken to some unhappy headlines during his year as prime minister but the verdicts on newspaper websites following Labour’s shock defeat in the Glasgow East by-election were probably the worst he has faced.

“Disaster” was the description of the Daily Mail and The Independent after one of Labour’s safest seats fell to the Scottish National Party. The Daily Telegraph called it “Humiliation for Brown” while “Catastrophe for Labour” was The Guardian’s verdict.

The latest terrible poll result, coming after Labour lost its deposit in Henley, left David Cameron clamouring for a general election and the focus once again on Brown’s future, with speculation once more that he will face a leadership challenge.

Is it all over now for Brown? Do you think it’s time for him to step down or be replaced? Send us your comments.

The end of Brown?

Hopefully it’s the end of the whole rotten pack of them.

I’d like to see them suffer further humiliation for a couple of years, before suffering the biggest electoral defeat in history. Then hopefully they can stay in the wilderness for, say, 30 years, by which time I won’t give a toss any more.

For God’s sake Brown get out now. People don’t like you, they certainly don’t trust you. You have no clear policies, you have no charisma at all, you have this very annoying habit of literally grinning at the wrong time and in the wrong place (whenever you do smile).

Looking at your face you would think that you are sucking on a lemon. You are constantly talking about “international problems”.

The people of the UK are not concerned with ‘international problems, they want to know about how much is it to fill up my car and how much more tax are you and your chancellor going to hit us with.

For goodness sake won’t you listen to what is said, GET OUT now and take most of your cabinet (Scottish) sycophants with you.

I think Gordon should ask Mugabe for help on how to win the next election.

Brown, this is trhe end, humiliating defeat after humiliating defeat. you are the worst and most despised non-elected prime minister we have ever had the misfortune to see. Get out, and take your miserable lot of lefty flops with you.

Bring back Thatcher. Someone who may turn the country around.

Perhaps now the British Establishment will appreciate that there is a political, cultural , social and historical change at work in Scotland. Scotand has very little in common with England these days and with distinctive legal, educational, religious and economic profiles and a legitimate Parliamentary sovereignty regained the UK as a political entity is dead.

Forget the usual cliches about “secession” as if Scotland would be an illegal entity on a par with Kosovo , the precedent is there in the dissolution of Czechoslovakia in 2 peaceful, prosperous States at the heart of the European Union or the dissolution of the Union between Norway and Sweden. Forget the threats to block Scottish membership of the EU, membership of EEA like Norway or Switzerland could be sufficient for Scotland anyway.

Think of the contribution the Republic of Ireland has made on the International Diplomatic stage with its initiatives in the UN that lead to the NPT or its and respected contribution to UN peace-keeping.

No doubt as the the usual dirty tricks will re-emerge with planted half-truth stories in the media on Oil & Gas sovereign rights and median lines in the North Sea or State Pensions disappearing etc etc.

Bottom line is Scotland is needed as a base for Trident and as a recruiting ground for lost causes like Iraq.

The message is the game is up ! Alba is back

Gordon Brown and his government should resign and be forced to live for at least 3 months as the rest of us and then they would realise what a mess they have made of a country of which I was once proud to be a citizen . Now like many others I can’t wait for the day I can finaly say goodbye!!

Brown should definately go. If a CEO performed this badly they would be out the door. Brown is sullen & inefective; he has no direction & should listen to the electorate who have literally voted with their feet and are deserting the party in droves.

Anyone But Cameron. It’s simple as ABC…

all the whingers on here are obviously either Tory or SNP, if you are a Scot you are fully entitled to show support for independance, that is to be expected. But whatever you do, DO NOT VOTE TORY. bring back Thatcher one wrote… in Scotland? I don’t think so, remember what she and all her backstabbing cabinet did to Scotland, we don’t want them here in England and Wales either. For God’s sake, whatever you do, please, oh please, do not vote Tory, not only will it definately be the end of the Union but the end of life as we know it.

A new government who don’t deliberately talk us into a recession and honor a vote on Europe ,[getting more and more like a dictatorship] just go!

I think that Gordon Brown should call an election in say 4 months time. That would give all the political parties time to have their conferences and settle their election manifestos. It would also give Labour time to choose whether to keep Gordon or switch to another leader. Perhaps the Queen should take the initiative as she once did in Australia?

Brown you self centered idiot go now and give the country some chance to start it’s recovery.

People seem to forget that the last Tory govenment was 11 years ago.

Labour and their supporters are still unbelievably trying to blame a lot of their ills on the last Tory administration. Labour have messed up big time and it is time to stop blaming others and to finally admit their mistakes.

Gordon Brown says he is getting on with the job, which is what people want him to do, this is not true people want him to resign and call an election. Some Hope :-(

A sad end to a sad leader, go now before the country goes bankrupt trying to keep all the goverment and town hall workers? employed to do nothing.

Wellsaid, Tony P. Though I am not a Labour peson, if only the Tory Party had suffered an an even more calamitous defeat in 1997 then their present revival wouldn’t have got off the ground. They are a useless party that effectively stands for nothing. They won’t stop immigration, they won’t do anything substantial about law and order and they won’t even take us out of the EU without which we can’t even begin to put this country to rights again.

People really need to wake-up. If idiots in this part of the United Kingdom vote Tory and Dave Boy enters No.10 then Scotland will leave the UK and I for one will be very sad if they do.

If the Labour Party had any sense then they would institute electoral reform before the next election. This is imperitive if the Union is to be saved.

Its about time the general public woke up to the fact that we are being taxed into oblivion by a useless Labour goverment who surprisingly no one seems to have voted for. The government only want to give our money away to useless courses that dont do this country any good except that they keep holding their hands out. The economy is so bad that our government fiddle the figures on inflation to keep us from knowing the truth. The governor of the Bank of England doesnt need a load of cronies round him to advise that interest rates need to go down he should be made to put down interest rates by at least 1% and Banks and building societies should be forced to do the same to help people keep a home over their heads for their families and get the economy moving again..

‘GB’ definetely does not stand for ‘Great Britain’
My father passed away a few years ago, the only consulation I have is that he did not see what a ‘bloody balls up’ Labour and Brown have made of his old England!!
The best bit is when the Labour party talk about ‘winning back votes’ No Chance!!!!!!!!!

New Labour under Brown - Uncontrolled Immigration
Higher Taxes on the Poor
Knife Crime out of Control
No Police on the streets
No School Discipline
Lack of National identity in theUK
Billions wasted on various schemes - ID cards anyone?

How anyone can even consider voting for Brown after the last Year i cannot understand.
Definately the worst PM in British History

- Posted by Ed Smith

This is the last ever Labour government. After the next election Salmond will take Scotland to independence and England will be free of the malign influence of Scottish Socialist MPs.

21 more months of the walking dead.

How much more damage will they do before we’re finally rid of them?

- Posted by Andrew

I for one eould be very glad to see an end to the endless tax and spend policies, state databases, ID cards, unrestricted immigration, endless ‘green’ taxes purely for raising revenue, denied referendum, etc ad nauseum.

Time to call an election Mr Brown

- Posted by Dave K

Hopefully the middleclass voters that were conned by Blair have now got the message and will not be so foolish next time now that they know Tony Blairs legacy and can see that this lot are only interested in feathering their own nest before the final countdown

Accountants should stay accountants! Just because you (think) you were a good chancellor, it doesnt make you a good prime minister! Stick to your knitting Mr Brown, immerse yourself in some numbers, shut the door, and give us all some peace. I feel embarrassed when i see you representing this country, standing alongside world leaders, you look pale, emotionless, characterless, NOT what we need. We need a Leader, not a good manager. Your just a manager, so go manage!

Unfortunately if Gordon Brown goes there has to be an election which is why Labour Ministers are apprehensive. An election with Brown at the helm would result in the result the Tories faced in 1997 which would take years to overcome and many of the current leaders would then have lost their chance of power.

Anyone but a Labourite it is as simple as ABC. Each time they have been in Gov. it’s their spend spend spend until you drop attitude that has been their and our undoing. Those with Labourite attitudes are not fit people for Gov.

Some of the posts here are excremental, obtuse and intellectually bankrupt.

Brown lost my vote over his habeus corpus fiasco, but I draw the line at an outright unprincipled attack on the poor guy. Gordon’s human rights spring to mind…

That he is NOT responsible for his predesssors sins - or the surrent international economic woes, is as clear as crystal.

Give the guy a chance and maybe some of you should tone down your ‘rhetoric diabolique’ and start posting like mature, thoughtful and fair individuals.

I do not like reading mullock posts and the standard here has slipped badly.

Brown is still our leader and he is still the same guy handed a pretty rancid poisoned chalice.

Give him a break!!

Brown will go with the rest of them in 2010 unless he calls an earlier general election, in which case he will go then. Labour have got nobody to replace him.

When the political history of the 21st century in Britain is written, three main themes will be recorded for this first decade:

it was the last gasp of Socialism in England;
it was the last attempt of the Scottish political class to control England;
it was the end of the United Kingdom of Great Britain as a properly functioning homogeneous nation.

These things are inextricably linked. Look out for the political equivalent of a scorched earth policy over the next 2 years as Labour seeks to consolidate the damage it has done before being consigned to history.

He made the UK bankrupt as a chancellor - now he has made the UK morally bankrupt as PM.

- Posted by Brian

Brian you know that is a ridiculous charge!

- Posted by The Truth Is...

Gordon Brown MUST stay. It is the only way we are assured of the SNP remaining rock solid in Scotland and having a Conservative government in Westminster after the next election……BRING IT ON.

I did not like Blair but at least he lied with Panache and one almost believed him. Brown lies as he did as Chancellor but without charm and so is never believed.

There are so many Tory rants in this blog that it’s impossible to take it seriously. Bring back Thatcher? Did you notice that’s she’s suffering from dementia? Some of us thought she was always demented and what she did to British industry, it has never recovered. David Cameron? You have to be joking. I admit I’m disappointed in Gordon Brown - I had high hopes of him and they’ve not been realised but to blame him for an international crisis brought on by greedy bankers (who incidentally have not all resigned en masse) gambling with out money is to show that most of your bloggers aren’t interested in facts, just waving a Tory flag. People shouldn’t be fooled by the Tories - they’ve forgotten the slease, the high interest rates, the selling off of council houses that has made things worse for people trying to start a home who will never be able to afford to buy because of their poor wages - not something the Tories are likely to improve! Try thinking for a change and you’ll understand why so many Scottish former Labour supporters now admire and support Alex Salmond. The Tories are and always have been the party of the rich and powerful. Anybody else who supports them is deluded into thinking that the Tories will make them rich. Sorry folks, these are the bankers who gambled with your money and caused at least one of the problems you are trying to blame on Gordon Brown.

I think the main reason Labour have remained in power for so long was due to the charisma of Mr Blair. Mr Brown has no charisma and the public never wanted to see him in the top seat. This along with his own selfish determination to succeed Mr Blair has led to Labour’s dramatic demise. Lastly, his “apparent” success as chancellor is finally bearing fruit with the country soon to be in recession ! When the times were good he just kept on spending in all the wrong areas. Now the bad times are about to smack us in the face we have no reserve.
