Raising the pension age

BRITAIN/The Conservatives say they plan to raise the retirement age for men to 66 from 65 by 2016 if they win power, a measure that could raise 13 billion pounds to help plug the huge shortfall in the public finances.

They would also hold a review of the retirement age that could speed up further rises - potentially ushering in a state pension age for both men and women of 68 as early as 2020.

Bringing forward the increase in the retirement age will mean about 2.5 million people aged between 48 and 57 will have to work at least a year longer than they were expecting before they can get a state pension.

Do you think this is either fair or necessary? Should the money come from other cuts and savings?

This is a disgrace i am just under 50 when i was at school the idear was to have more leisure time to enjoy family and sports as you got older. You work 40 years then retire your body is not used to the change and your dead within a 2 years ,so the pupose of life is to work dedicate yourself to a company and then die it seems we need robots not humans and we are paying for self indulgent mps who can not run a bath never mind a goverment. It will soon be little boys up chimneys.

A more equitable solution would have been to propose a tax on future banking and financial sector profits, and not to default on social contracts for a generation of people who have contributed the most into these schemes and will in all probability receive the least.

History is repeating itself.

The Socialists bankrupt the country then the Tories get the blame for taking the unpopular actions that are necessary to get things up and running again. The people who voted Socialist and will now lose out on their pensions can blame themselves for their own stupidity.

I’m 50 and have no intention of stopping work as a self-employed person until I’m at least 70, unless ill health forces me. In my opinion, anyone in good health who doesn’t want to work until they are about that age is either a lazy b*gger or very rich, so they don’t get much sympathy from me.

History is repeating itself - But the question is Jason, who can the people who did not vote Labour blame for losing their pensions, the Tories perhaps?
