Teen’s death sparks debate on corporal punishment


The death of Rouvanjit Rawla, a Kolkata schoolboy allegedly driven to suicide after being thrashed and humiliated by his teachers, has sparked a media debate on corporal punishment in Indian schools.

Rouvanjit, a student of La Martiniere School for Boys, was found dead in his room days after he was caned by his teachers.

Game over for sports VIPs in India?


The rules of the game in India’s multi-million dollar sports industry are set to change with the sports ministry’s decision to bring back a key 1975 regulation.

The regulation, capping the tenure of sports bosses, has pitted the ministry against National Sporting Federation (NSF) chiefs, who have threatened that the ministry’s actions might invite a ban on Indian sports.

Europe-bound passengers stranded at Delhi airport

Europe-bound passengers were still stranded at New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi airport on Tuesday, five days after European airports were cut off from the rest of the world by a huge volcanic ash cloud. Some of the affected travellers spoke to Reuters at the airport about their desperate efforts to get home.

Polish tourist Joanna was travelling from Sri Lanka to Poland.
