Where there’s smoke

Posted by: Jeremy Schultz

We took a liking to this contribution from Jashim Salam, of children watching from above as firefighters work to extinguish a blaze in the Bangladeshi city of Chittagong. The fire’s smoke, normally a tad frightening, manages to seem almost whimsical as it drifts up past the kids and into the shafts of light.

The other Michael Jackson

Posted by: Jeremy Schultz

The sudden death of pop icon Michael Jackson was surely the biggest story of the week and his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame quickly became a go-to point for fans and media. Only there was one problem - the pop icon’s Hollywood star was hidden under a red carpet the night of his death. Contributor Daniel Dreifuss captures the confusion in this moody portrait as photographers and fans gather mistakenly around the star of Los Angeles-area radio personality Michael Jackson.

Images of a democracy icon

Posted by: Corinne Perkins

Detained Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi is one of the most difficult people for journalists to photograph as access to the democracy icon is severely limited. Often the only way to see an image of Suu Kyi is on the posters and placards of demonstrators protesting her detention, or in the case above against fresh charges brought against her.

Masks have become a visual indicator for fears over influenza A (H1N1), formerly referred to as swine flu. The photos above combine the use of masks with other elements, such as attending school, checking a mobile phone or the drama of a black and white image, to produce compelling images.
