Soccer-Humbled United slipping into mediocrity

March 17 (Reuters) – Conceding three penalties to Liverpool at Old Trafford would have usually triggered a furore among Manchester United fans, players and management under any other circumstances but for the humiliating manner in which they lost Sunday’s derby.

Not even the fiery Wayne Rooney questioned referee Mark Clattenburg’s decisions on an afternoon the England striker described as one of the worst days he ever had in football, after a crushing 3-0 defeat left United with only a forlorn hope of finishing in the top four in the Premier League.

Dejected Kovacic hoping for World Cup boost

ZAGREB (Reuters) – Croatia midfielder Mateo Kovacic needs to get back playing regularly for Inter Milan not only to rekindle his flailing Serie A career but to keep his place in the national team’s starting line-up, the 19-year old has said.

Kovacic, who moved to Inter from Dinamo Zagreb in 2012, thrived in a deeper role in his first season in Italy under Andrea Stramaccioni but has struggled as an attacking midfielder this season, with Walter Mazzari in charge.

Soccer-Serbia coach shuns old-style patriotism and promising youngsters

By Zoran and Milosavljevic BELGRADE, Feb 24 (Reuters) – Serbia must adopt a new set of values to prove their soccer patriotism and the experiment of introducing promising home-based players is over, assistant coach Ilija Petkovic said on Monday.

Ljubinko Drulovic was named this month as caretaker head coach until a permanent successor to Sinisa Mihajlovic is appointed in June, with Petkovic as his number two.

Soccer-Red Star leapfrog rivals Partizan into top spot

BELGRADE, Feb 22 (Reuters) – Red Star Belgrade took over first place in Serbia with a 2-1 home win over Javor Ivanjica as the Balkan country’s 16-team top flight resumed on Saturday after a 10-week winter break.

Red Star, European Cup winners in 1991, have 35 points from 16 matches, one more than titel holders and bitter city foes Partizan who were held to a 0-0 draw at sixth-placed Novi Pazar.

BELGRADE (Reuters) – Former double Euroleague champions Barcelona made it six wins out of six in the second group stage as American guard Brad Oleson inspired a recovery to secure an 80-70 win over Emporio Armani Milan on Friday.

Six-time Euroleague winners CSKA Moscow ground out a 74-71 victory at Galatasaray in a fervent atmosphere created by the Turkish fans, with Serbia centre Nenad Krstic scoring a game-high 24 points for the Russian title holders.

Real, Olympiakos extend perfect Euroleague starts

BELGRADE (Reuters) – Holders Olympiakos Piraeus and favourites Real Madrid moved to 11 straight Euroleague wins this season after impressive displays in the opening round of the Top 16, the second group stage of the 24-team competition.

Debutants Bayern Munich stunned Zalgiris Kaunas 84-66 away, CSKA Moscow ground out an 84-77 overtime victory at fellow Russians Lokomotiv Krasnodar and Maccabi Tel Aviv celebrated a 90-84 success at Galatasaray.
