Soccer-Inter and Leverkusen reach Europa League last 32

BELGRADE, Nov 8 (Reuters) – Inter Milan and Bayer Leverkusen cruised into the Europa League knockout stage with emphatic wins on Thursday but holders Atletico Madrid and former winners Liverpool suffered surprise defeats.

Russia’s Rubin Kazan, Olympique Lyon, Hanover 96 and Metalist Kharkiv joined Bayer and treble UEFA Cup winners Inter in sealing their progress to the last 32 with two games to spare.

Inter Milan cruise into last 32 of Europa League

BELGRADE (Reuters) – Rodrigo Palacio scored twice as Inter Milan cruised through to the Europa League knockout stages on Thursday while holders Atletico Madrid’s 16-match unbeaten run came to an end in Portugal.

Inter, who beat Partizan Belgrade 3-1 in Serbia with all the goals coming in the second half, were joined in the next phase by Bayer Leverkusen, Rubin Kazan, Metalist Kharkiv, Hanover 96 and Olympique Lyon.

BELGRADE (Reuters) – Europa League holders Atletico Madrid failed to secure the point required to qualify for the knockout stages after a 2-0 defeat at Portugal’s Academica ended their 16-match unbeaten run in the continent’s second-tier competition on Thursday.

Wilson Eduardo netted twice for Academica to keep alive their slim hopes of reaching the last 32, having volleyed the hosts ahead after an inviting cross by Joas Dias before he steered in a second-half penalty.

Soccer-Champions Partizan go five points clear in Serbia

BELGRADE, Nov 3 (Reuters) – Serbian champions Partizan Belgrade took a five-point lead at the top of the first division with a 4-0 win at Radnicki Nis after their bitter city rivals Red Star slumped to a 2-1 home defeat by Jagodina on Saturday.

Partizan have 30 points from 11 games followed by Red Star on 25 and Jagodina with 23 after their first win over the 1991 European Cup winners in 10 league games.

CSKA thrash Besiktas to stop Turkish treble

BELGRADE (Reuters) – Fenerbahce and Anadolu Efes delighted Istanbul fans with remarkable wins in Europe’s premier club basketball competition but CSKA Moscow spoiled the Turkish party with a 85-58 rout of Besiktas on Friday.

Holders Olympiakos Piraeus scraped a 79-77 home win over Euroleague debutants Cedevita Zagreb while 2010 champions Barcelona eked out an 85-82 victory against 1992 winners Partizan Belgrade thanks to an audacious three-pointer by Brazilian guard Marcelinho Huertas.

Serbia to let UK deal with U-21 charges – source

BELGRADE (Reuters) – Serbia will allow violent conduct charges against England Under-21 players Steven Caulker and Thomas Lees and assistant coach Steve Wigley to be dealt with by the British justice system, a source said on Wednesday.

The source, close to the public prosecutor’s office, spoke as the accused players were named for the first time since the mass brawl in the Euro 2013 qualifier on October 16 in the central Serbian city of Krusevac.

Holders Olympiakos skating on thin ice

BELGRADE (Reuters) – Holders Olympiakos Piraeus are in danger of being eliminated in the preliminary group stage of the Euroleague after a 79-61 home defeat by Zalgiris Kaunas on Friday exposed a myriad of weaknesses.

Eight-times champions Real Madrid produced a fine performance to record an 83-75 victory at Fenerbahce while Panathinaikos Athens, winners of six Euroleague titles, eased to an 85-67 triumph at Slovenians Olimpija Ljubljana.
