FIFA asks Serbia to help Kosovo’s football development

BELGRADE (Reuters) – FIFA president Sepp Blatter has asked Serbia to help develop soccer in its former southern province of Kosovo and has drawn up a plan to encourage the territory’s youngsters to play the game.

“Having come to Serbia at the invitation of your Prime Minister (Ivica Dacic), I asked him to find the solidarity and a solution required by your neighbours in Kosovo to let their young players play football,” Blatter told a news conference in the Serbian FA’s Stara Pazova headquarters on Wednesday.

Serbia to rely on teenager Mitrovic, says Mihajlovic

BELGRADE (Reuters) – Teenager Aleksandar Mitrovic could be the answer to Serbia’s attacking problems and a long-term solution up front, coach Sinisa Mihajlovic said on Friday after naming his 23-man squad for their World Cup football qualifier in Belgium on June 7.

The 18-year-old striker, who scored 15 goals in his first professional season at Partizan Belgrade and helped them to clinch a record sixth successive league title, impressed with a first-half hat-trick in Serbia’s 4-0 warm-up win against local part-timers Dunav on Thursday.

Soccer-Partizan win sixth successive Serbian league title

BELGRADE, May 22 (Reuters) – Serbian champions Partizan Belgrade won their 25th league title and a record sixth in a row with a match to spare after a 2-0 win at relegated Smederevo on Wednesday.

The win left them eight points clear of city rivals Red Star before the final round of games.

Soccer-Partizan win troubled Belgrade derby as 92 fans arrested

BELGRADE, May 18 (Reuters) – Fan violence outside Partizan’s stadium overshadowed a tepid Belgrade derby that the league leaders won 1-0 against Red Star on Saturday thanks to a stunning late free kick from Milos Jojic.

More than 90 fans were arrested before the match after Partizan’s team bus was pelted with rocks when approaching the stadium and rival supporters also fought running battles on Belgrade’s outskirts, Serbian police said in a statement.

Soccer-Red Star’s Sa Pinto braced for title comeback derby

BELGRADE, May 17 (Reuters) – Ricardo Sa Pinto had only a forlorn hope of ending Red Star Belgrade’s title drought when he became coach in March but the club is on the verge of completing a memorable fightback when they visit Partizan on Saturday.

Red Star, who last won the Serbian championship in 2007 before relinquishing their supremacy to bitter city foes Partizan, were 11 points behind the champions and league leaders when the 40-year old former Portugal forward replaced Aleksandar Jankovic.

BELGRADE, May 11 (Reuters) – Serbian champions Partizan Belgrade and bitter city foes Red Star set up a potentially explosive derby next weekend after winning on Saturday to continue their two-horse title race.

Partizan, aiming for a record sixth successive league crown, triumphed 1-0 at struggling Radnicki Kragujevac to stay two points clear of second-placed Red Star who beat OFK Belgrade by the same score.
