BELGRADE (Reuters) – Former NBA forward Sonny Weems shone in CSKA Moscow’s 76-71 overtime win at Partizan Belgrade but his effervescence was overshadowed by a scandal which sent shockwaves through the Euroleague on Friday.

Fenerbahce Istanbul shooting guard Romain Sato was detained overnight by Slovenian police on charges of trying to enter the country with a forged passport and missed his team’s 81-75 win at Olimpija Ljubljana after he was released and sent home.

Olympiakos hand Nocioni sour Euroleague return

BELGRADE (Reuters) – Former Chicago Bulls forward Andres Nocioni got a rude awakening on his return to the Euroleague after eight seasons in the NBA when holders Olympiakos Piraues beat his Spanish side Caja Laboral 85-81 in the opening round of matches.

Nocioni, who joined the Bulls in 2004 after winning the Olympic gold medal with Argentina in the Athens Games, was guilty of an astonishing miss with the clock ticking in the final minute of a tense contest.

BELGRADE, Oct 12 (Reuters) – Marc Wilmots got the better of Serbia counterpart Sinisa Mihajlovic in a battle of two former internationals emphatically won by the former Belgium forward whose team romped to a 3-0 World Cup qualifying win on Friday.

Serbia’s first competitive defeat on home soil since 2001, when they were beaten 1-0 at home by Russia, came after Wilmots readjusted his formation following early domination by the hosts.

Soccer-Solid Belgium engineer 3-0 win against Serbia

BELGRADE, Oct 12 (Reuters) – Cool finishing by striker Christian Benteke, midfielder Kevin de Bruyne and late substitute Kevin Mirallas gave Belgium a valuable 3-0 win at Serbia in an entertaining Group A World Cup qualifier on Friday.

The result left the Belgians joint top of the group with seven points from three games along with Croatia, who came from behind to win 2-1 at fellow former Yugoslavs Macedonia.

Expanded Euroleague strives to rival NBA

BELGRADE (Reuters) – More games and bigger arenas will enable Europe’s premier basketball competition to aim for NBA standards, Euroleague chief Jordi Bertomeu has vowed ahead of the new season starting on Thursday.

This month’s warm-up games between Euroleague teams and NBA outfits suggest the gulf between the top sides from Europe and North America has narrowed, with Fenerbahce Istanbul pulling off a shock 97-91 win over 17-times NBA champions Boston Celtics.
