Real aim to end 20-year Euroleague wait on home court

MADRID (Reuters) – European club basketball heavyweights Real Madrid will be hard pressed to win their first Euroleague title since 1995 when they host the competition’s Final Four this weekend.

The showpiece tournament also features dark horses Fenerbahce Istanbul, who clash with Real on Friday for a berth in Sunday’s final, as well as CSKA Moscow and Olympiakos Piraeus who meet in the other semi.

Injuries and arrests after violent Belgrade derby

BELGRADE (Reuters) – Thirty-five police officers were hurt and 41 fans arrested in a violent Belgrade derby between Red Star and Partizan on Saturday.

“Hooligan behaviour has led to slight injuries to 35 police officers,” the Serbian Interior Ministry said in a statement.

Soccer-Partizan hold Red Star in derby marred by crowd trouble

BELGRADE, April 25 (Reuters) – Serbian league leaders Partizan Belgrade held champions and bitter city foes Red Star to a 0-0 draw in a derby match marred by bad crowd trouble before kickoff on Saturday.

The start was delayed for 45 minutes after home Red Star supporters pelted riot police with seats and flares, forcing officers to retreat from the north tier that houses the club’s diehard fans.

Real and Olympiakos reach Euroleague Final Four

BELGRADE (Reuters) – Real Madrid and Olympiakos Piraeus made it through to the Euroleague Final Four after a thrilling climax to the premier club basketball competition’s playoffs on Thursday.

Real, who host the May 15-17 showpiece event, beat Anadolu Efes Istanbul 76-63 away for a 3-1 win over the Turkish side in the best-of-five quarter-final series and Olympiakos knocked out visitors Barcelona by the same margin after winning 71-68.

Fenerbahce reach Euroleague Final Four, CSKA held

BELGRADE (Reuters) – Fenerbahce Istanbul became the first team to qualify for the Euroleague Final Four as a 75-74 overtime win at Maccabi Tel Aviv on Monday completed a 3-0 sweep of the holders in the best-of-five quarter-final series.

However, the competition’s six-time winners CSKA still have work to do after an 86-85 defeat at Panathinaikos reduced their lead to 2-1, with Game Four scheduled for Wednesday.

BELGRADE (Reuters) – – Real Madrid took a 2-0 lead over Anadolu Efes Istanbul in their Euroleague best-of-five quarter-final series on Friday while Barcelona wasted home court advantage against Olympiakos Piraeus.

Real beat Anadolu 90-85 in an absorbing clash with the lead changing hands time and again. A resilient Olympiakos drew level 1-1 with Barca after a 76-63 victory.

CSKA and Fenerbahce close in on Euroleague Final Four

BELGRADE (Reuters) – Six-time Euroleague winners CSKA Moscow and dark horses Fenerbahce Istanbul took 2-0 leads against their rivals in the competition’s best-of-five quarter-finals after sparkling home wins on Thursday.

CSKA blew away Panathinaikos 100-80 and Fenerbahce brushed aside holders Maccabi Tel Aviv 82-67 as both sides moved within one win of reaching the May 15-17 Final Four in Madrid.
