Tennis-Djokovic out of Serbia’s Davis Cup clash with India

BELGRADE, Sept 8 (Reuters) – World number one Novak Djokovic will miss Serbia’s Davis Cup World Group playoff tie against India in Bangalore next weekend, the Balkan nation’s coach Bogdan Obradovic said on Monday.

“Djokovic will definitely not join us in India and his fatigue is the biggest reason,” Obardovic told Serbia’s tennis federation website (www.teniskisavez.com).

(Reuters) – Holders United States and hosts Spain ended the Basketball World Cup preliminary stage with 5-0 records after emphatic wins on Thursday against modest opposition in the first knockout round of the 24-team event.

The U.S. strolled to a 95-71 victory over Ukraine that sent the eastern Europeans home and next face what should be another easy ride against Mexico who clinched a last-16 berth with an 87-71 triumph over South Korea.

U.S. and Slovenia advance as Lithuania suffer

(Reuters) – Holders United States and dark horses Slovenia eased into the basketball World Cup knockout stages with two games to spare but eastern European giants Lithuania left themselves with work to do after a surprise defeat by Australia on Tuesday.

Unfancied Ukraine produced the day’s other upset with a 64-58 defeat of Turkey while the Dominican Republic boosted their own hopes after a 74-68 success against Finland.
