U.S. vulnerable without big names: Prigioni

BELGRADE (Reuters) – Hosts Spain and several other teams are capable of defeating a United States side missing their biggest names at the Aug. 30-Sept. 14 basketball World Cup, New York Knicks playmaker Pablo Prigioni told Reuters.

The 37-year-old Argentina point guard, who joined the Knicks in 2012 from Spanish side Caja Laboral, also announced that he would be quitting the international stage after the 24-nation tournament in order to focus on his NBA career.

Serbia will struggle to repeat Yugoslav-era success, says coach

BELGRADE (Reuters) – Accustomed to basketball glory when they were part of the former Yugoslavia, Serbia will struggle to be more than also- rans as an independent nation at this year’s World Cup in Spain, their coach Aleksandar Djordjevic said.

The 46-year old former playmaker, one of Europe’s most decorated players, believes that even a fraction of the success his generation enjoyed in wealthier times is unlikely in the foreseeable future.

“The agreement we have reached with Advocaat is a result of month-long negotiations we’ve had with him and we will officially unveil him as the new coach in the next few days,” Karadzic said on Tuesday.

Shaqiri treble sends Switzerland into last 16

(Reuters) – Switzerland powered into the World Cup knockout stages as Group E runners-up and will play Argentina for a quarter final berth after a superb Xherdan Shaqiri hat-trick gave them a 3-0 win over Honduras on Wednesday.

The Swiss finished behind group winners France, who will meet Nigeria after a 0-0 draw with third-placed Ecuador, also eliminated along with the modest Hondurans who suffered three defeats in as many games.

Soccer-Shaqiri treble sends Switzerland into last 16

MANAUS, Brazil, June 25 (Reuters) – Switzerland powered into the World Cup knockout stages as Group E runners-up and will play Argentina for a quarter final berth after a superb Xherdan Shaqiri hat-trick gave them a 3-0 win over Honduras on Wednesday.

Honduras finished bottom of the group with three defeats in as many games.

Kosovo-born forward Shaqiri enjoyed a memorable afternoon as he linked up brilliantly with striker Josip Drmic, who replaced Haris Seferovic in the starting line-up.
