Soccer-No excuses if we fail, says new Serbia coach Advocaat

BELGRADE, July 28 (Reuters) – Serbia have top quality players and there will be no excuse for failure to qualify for the 2016 European Championship in France, new coach Dick Advocaat said on Monday.

“I found Serbia’s offer interesting because of the squad’s talent and quality,” the 66-year-old Dutchman told a news conference.

BELGRADE (Reuters) – Dutchman Dick Advocaat will take over as Serbia coach to lead the team’s bid to qualify for the 2016 European Championship, the Balkan country’s Football Association (FSS) president Tomislav Karadzic told Reuters.

“The agreement we have reached with Advocaat is a result of month-long negotiations we’ve had with him and we will officially unveil him as the new coach in the next few days,” Karadzic said on Tuesday.

Shaqiri treble sends Switzerland into last 16

(Reuters) – Switzerland powered into the World Cup knockout stages as Group E runners-up and will play Argentina for a quarter final berth after a superb Xherdan Shaqiri hat-trick gave them a 3-0 win over Honduras on Wednesday.

The Swiss finished behind group winners France, who will meet Nigeria after a 0-0 draw with third-placed Ecuador, also eliminated along with the modest Hondurans who suffered three defeats in as many games.

MANAUS, Brazil, June 25 (Reuters) – Switzerland powered into the World Cup knockout stages as Group E runners-up and will play Argentina for a quarter final berth after a superb Xherdan Shaqiri hat-trick gave them a 3-0 win over Honduras on Wednesday.

Honduras finished bottom of the group with three defeats in as many games.

Kosovo-born forward Shaqiri enjoyed a memorable afternoon as he linked up brilliantly with striker Josip Drmic, who replaced Haris Seferovic in the starting line-up.

Expected by fans to reach the World Cup knockout stages for the first time since 1998 when they finished third, the Croatians slumped to 3-1 defeats by Brazil and Mexico which meant another early exit.

Bento hanging on maths and U.S.-German honesty

MANAUS Brazil (Reuters) – Portugal are hanging on to a World Cup last-16 berth by their fingernails but will head into the final Group G match with Ghana certain that the U.S. and Germany will not play for the draw that would send both sides through, coach Paolo Bento said.
