Tennis-Serbia, Britain in control as depleted Swiss hold Belgium

KRALJEVO, Serbia, March 6 (Reuters) – Serbia carved out a 2-0 lead over rivals Croatia while Britain led the U.S. by the same score and holders Switzerland were tied with Belgium in the Davis Cup world group first round on Friday.

France also raced into a 2-0 lead away to Germany after Gilles Simon overpowered Jan-Lennard Struff in five sets and Gael Monfils beat Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-4 7-5 7-6(4).

Djokovic praises Serb fans for applauding Croatia anthem

KRALJEVO, Serbia (Reuters) – World number one Novak Djokovic praised the Serbia fans who gave Balkan rivals Croatia a warm welcome and applauded their national anthem at their Davis Cup first-round tie on Friday.

The hostility that normally exists when the bitter rivals meet in other team sports was nowhere to be seen as fans in the central Serbian city of Kraljevo gave the Croatians a red-carpet reception before Djokovic pulled it from under their feet.

Red Star parcel up shock win over Maccabi, CSKA rally

BELGRADE (Reuters) – Red Star Belgrade produced their best Euroleague display of the season by beating holders Maccabi Tel Aviv 89-76 on Thursday while six-times winners CSKA Moscow ground out an 81-74 victory at Laboral Kutxa Vitoria.

Barcelona triumphed 81-77 at Panathinaikos and Fenerbahce Istanbul steamrolled to a 92-79 home win over Russians Nizhny Novgorod after all 12 players scored for the Turkish side.

Dortmund’s Subotic turns down Serbia return

BELGRADE (Reuters) – Borussia Dortmund defender Neven Subotic has turned down Serbia coach Radovan Curcic’s request to resume his international career ahead of the national team’s crunch Euro 2016 qualifiers, the Balkan nation’s football association (FSS) has said.

The 26-year old centre-back last played for Serbia in October 2013, when he walked out on the national team at the end of their futile World Cup 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign.

Maccabi win thriller as Real rout Red Star

BELGRADE (Reuters) – Euroleague holders Maccabi Tel Aviv and record eight-time winners Real Madrid edged closer to the playoffs of Europe’s elite club competition with contrasting wins on Thursday.

Maccabi edged Panathinaikos 73-70 while Real recovered from an early 14-6 deficit to blow away Red Star Belgrade 85-61 after the visitors committed a whopping 19 turnovers.
