Soccer-U.S. must recover quickly after Portugal draw – Klinsmann

MANAUS, Brazil, June 22 (Reuters) – Allowing Portugal to snatch a last-gasp 2-2 draw was a blow but the United States must rebound quickly ahead of their final World Cup group match against Germany, coach Juergen Klinsmann said on Sunday.

Klinsmann also said his players had earned the respect of their opponents with a battling performance as they prepare to face the three-times World Cup winners on Thursday in Recife needing at least a point to guarantee a place in the last 16.

Soccer-Cold feet freeze Bosnia’s last 16 ambitions

June 22 (Reuters) – Bosnia’s maiden World Cup campaign was barely three minutes old when Sead Kolasinac’s clumsy own goal – the fastest in the tournament’s history – in the opening 2-1 Group F loss to Argentina set the tone for a tame early exit.

Although the Balkan nation had an Edin Dzeko goal wrongly disallowed in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat by Nigeria which ended their hopes or reaching the last 16, coach Safet Susic found no excuse for performances lacking the zest that got them to the finals.

Nigeria sink tame Bosnia with stroke of luck

By Zoran Milosavljevic

(Reuters) – Having played entertaining and high-scoring football to qualify for their first World Cup, Bosnia reverted to an unfamiliar defensive strategy and were severely punished for not taking risks against modest opposition on Saturday.

An industrious Nigeria outfit lacking the talent of previous generations was still too good for toothless Bosnia, whose nervy maiden appearance on the big stage ended in a tame exit.

Ronaldo key to Portugal recovery as US challenge looms

MANAUS Brazil (Reuters) – A wounded Portugal, still smarting from a 4-0 defeat by Germany, are fervently hoping that talismanic forward Cristiano Ronaldo is fit when they take on the United States in their second World Cup Group G game on Sunday.

The thrashing was the biggest ever loss the Portuguese have suffered at a World Cup and their misery deepened as central defender Pepe was sent off while Ronaldo struggled for form as he battled a knee injury.

Germany top dogs after Spanish fiasco, says Vlaovic

MANAUS Brazil (Reuters) – Germany are the top contender to win the 2014 World Cup with success now based on speed and dethroned champions Spain’s “tiki-taka” tactics now a relic in modern day football, former Croatia striker Goran Vlaovic told Reuters in an interview.

Vlaovic, who scored one of Croatia’s goals in a famous 3-0 win over the Germans in the 1998 tournament when the Balkan nation finished third, assessed the Spaniards were undone by their own tiki-taka style which had served them so well.
