Soccer-Partizan coach hit by firecracker and then sent off

BELGRADE, Nov 30 (Reuters) – Partizan Belgrade coach Marko Nikolic was hit by a firecracker in the first half and sent off for dissent in the second during their 1-1 draw at Novi Pazar in the Serbian first division on Sunday.

With away fans banned amid fears of crowd trouble, Novi Pazar supporters created an intimidating atmosphere which saw Nikolic struck by a hurled firecracker shortly after Danko Lazovic had headed the visitors in front.

Basketball – Grieving Red Star win as Real Madrid stutter

BELGRADE (Reuters) – Red Star Belgrade boosted their hopes of reaching the Euroleague Top 16 with a 79-62 home win over Neptunas Klaipeda in a sombre atmosphere on Thursday as the Serbian club mourned last week’s death of a supporter killed in fan violence in Istanbul.

Eight-time winners Real Madrid were stunned 85-75 at home by Unics Kazan, holders Maccabi Tel Aviv suffered an 84-61 home drubbing by CSKA Moscow and Olympiakos Piraeus lost their unbeaten record in an 89-70 defeat at Kutxa Laboral.

Soccer-New Serbia coach keen to tempt Vidic back

BELGRADE, Nov 26 (Reuters) – Serbia will try to persuade Nemanja Vidic to come out of international retirement in a bid to qualify for Euro 2016, new coach Radovan Curcic said on Wednesday.

Former Manchester United defender Vidic quit the national team after their failure to reach Euro 2012 and has struggled to fit in at Inter Milan after his move to Italy in July.

Elsewhere, Galatasaray ground out a 110-103 double overtime triumph over Red Star Belgrade after the Turkish side’s Serbian forward Zoran Erceg hit an audacious three-pointer from almost the halfway line with two seconds to go of regular time.

Soccer-Milosevic backs Under-21 coach Curcic for Serbia job

BELGRADE, Nov 21 (Reuters) – Radovan Curcic should take over as Serbia coach and be given time to develop the team on the back of his impressive record with the Under-21s, the country’s football association (FSS) vice-president Savo Milosevic said.

“My wish is to have a long-term coach appointed and I think Curcic meets all the requirements because he has done remarkably well with the Under-21 side,” former Aston Villa striker Milosevic told reporters on Friday.

BELGRADE, Nov 20 (Reuters) – – Former winners Barcelona, Olympiakos Piraeus and CSKA Moscow advanced to Euroleague basketball’s second group stage with four games to spare after contrasting wins on Thursday.

Barcelona cruised to a 99-77 win at Bayern Munich and CSKA blew away visiting Alba Berlin 95-66. Olympiakos edged Valencia 77-76 thanks to the last-minute exploits of playmaker Vassilis Spanoulis.

Soccer-Advocaat quits as Serbia coach after Denmark fiasco

BELGRADE, Nov 15 (Reuters) – Dutchman Dick Advocaat has stepped down as Serbia coach after a 3-1 home defeat by Denmark in the Euro 2016 qualifiers, the Balkan nation’s football association (FSS) said on Saturday.

“The FSS wishes to thank Advocaat as he has shown utmost professionalism and we are disappointed that our cooperation with him ended so abruptly,” the soccer governing body said.

“We see ourselves as big stars and always think we are better than others and that’s a very bad attitude,” the Chelsea defender told reporters after Serbia were blown away by the Danes in an empty stadium on Friday.
