Soccer-Serbia must prove worthy of respect says captain Ivanovic

BELGRADE, Sept 2 (Reuters) – Inconsistent Serbia must prove to their fans that they are worthy of respect and support when they meet Balkan foes Croatia at home in a key World Cup Group A qualifier on Friday, team captain Branislav Ivanovic said.

Disappointed with Serbia’s poor run, which left their chances of snatching a playoff berth hanging by a thread, fans have often jeered the national team during home games. Coach Sinisa Mihajlovic and FA head Tomislav Karadzic have also come under pressure to step down.

Matic back for Serbia’s crunch qualifiers

BELGRADE (Reuters) – Serbia have recalled Nemanja Matic for the World Cup qualifiers against Croatia and Wales but coach Sinisa Mihajlovic said the midfielder was not guaranteed his first competitive start in international football.

Matic, who has made five appearances for his country, last played for Serbia in June 2012 and pulled out of the national team in December after falling out with Mihajlovic who said the Benfica playmaker did not fit his 4-2-3-1 formation.

Warriors-bound Nedovic targets Euro success

BELGRADE (Reuters) – Serbian Nemanja Nedovic is thrilled to be heading to the NBA with the Golden State Warriors but says he is first focused on bringing glory to his national team in next month’s European Championship.

The Warriors plucked the versatile guard from relative obscurity in the first round of the 2013 NBA draft and will be closely watching his progress at the tournament in Slovenia.

BELGRADE (Reuters) – Two late goals gave Javor Ivanjica a shock 4-2 home win over 10-man Red Star Belgrade on Sunday as the 1991 European champions continued their routine of losing the opening game of the season.

Red Star’s fourth successive opening day defeat piled the pressure on their Slovenian coach Slavisa Stojanovic after they were also eliminated by Ukrainians Chernomorets Odessa in the Europa League third qualifying round on Thursday.

Soccer-Police probe fan snatching Partizan captain’s armband

By Zoran and Milosavljevic BELGRADE, Aug 8 (Reuters) – Serbia’s Interior Ministry is to investigate an incident in which a Partizan Belgrade fan tore the captain’s armband off striker Marko Scepovic after a Champions League match.

The leader of a die-hard fans’ group vaulted over a barrier and pulled off the armband after the Serbian champions were beaten 1-0 by Bulgaria’s Ludogorets at home in a third qualifying round, second leg match on Tuesday.

BELGRADE (Reuters) – Red Star Belgrade players must stop eating meat pies for breakfast, drinking beer after practice and enjoying wild nights out in the Serbian capital, senior club officials have warned.

Former European Cup winners Red Star struggled against modest Icelandic outfit IBV in the Europa League second qualifying round and barely deserved their 2-0 aggregate win, prompting manager Slavisa Stojanovic to rebuke his players after Sunday’s training session.
