Soccer-World-Inconsistent Croatia seek to revive spirit of ’98

April 28 (Reuters) – Based on the pedigree of their squad, Croatia have high hopes of reaching the knockout stage of the 2014 World Cup, but other factors may come into play against hosts Brazil, Cameroon and Mexico.

The Croatians, who have not reached the last 16 since their impressive third-place finish in the 1998 tournament, face a daunting opener against favourites Brazil in Sao Paulo on June 12 and defeat would put pressure on them to win the remaining two group fixtures against dangerous opponents.

Partizan spice up Serbian title race with derby win

BELGRADE (Reuters) – Champions Partizan Belgrade kept alive their hopes of a record seventh successive league crown after a late Nemanja Kojic goal earned a 2-1 home win over leaders Red Star in an action-packed city derby on Saturday.

The 1991 European Cup winners Red Star are in pole position with 62 points from 26 matches, three more than Partizan with four games left in the Serbian title race.

Real and CSKA march into Euroleague Final Four

BELGRADE (Reuters) – Heavyweight teams Real Madrid and CSKA Moscow reached the Euroleague’s Final Four after emphatic home wins over holders Olympiakos Piraeus and fellow Greeks Panathinaikos respectively on Friday.

The showpiece event in Milan will feature May 16 semi-finals between Real and traditional rivals Barcelona and with CSKA taking on Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Soccer-Steaua join dark horses Astra in Romanian Cup final

Red Star steal march on Partizan in Serbian title race

BELGRADE (Reuters) – Red Star Belgrade went three points clear of champions and city rivals Partizan at the top of the Serbian first division after Nikola Mijailovic and Dragan Mrdja gave them a 2-1 win at Spartak Subotica on Saturday.

The result left 1991 European Cup winners Red Star in the driving seat with 53 points from 22 games while Partizan, who host their bitter foes on April 26, have 50 after being held to a 1-1 home draw by sixth-placed Vojvodina Novi Sad.
